Pedro Neto Highlights Portugal's Defensive Strength in Nations League Win Over Norway
Pedro Neto Commends Portugal’s Defense After Tough Win in Norway
Pedro Neto praised Portugal's defensive resilience following their 2-1 victory over Norway in the UEFA Nations League. Goals from Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos helped secure a crucial away win at Ullevaal Stadium, putting Portugal three points clear at the top of Group A4.
Portugal’s Tactical Maturity Shines Through
Under coach Jorge Jesus, Portugal kept their strong form with a gritty performance against a high-intensity Norwegian side. The team showed great discipline and concentration throughout, particularly on defense. Neto, aged 26, expressed pride in how the entire squad handled Norway’s physical pressure.
Handling Norwegian Pressure
Speaking to Sport TV, Neto described the match as demanding due to Norway’s relentless pressing and quality players. At times, especially near the end of the first half, Norway gained more control, but Portugal remained tough to break down.
“It was a very tough match against a team with a lot of quality, top-class players and high intensity,” Neto said. “They pressed very high up the pitch with great intensity and we did well. At times, they managed to take control a little more - perhaps towards the end of the first half - but we were resilient.”
Quick Response After Haaland’s Equalizer
The turning point came early in the second half when Erling Haaland leveled the score for Norway. Portugal responded swiftly, with Ramos scoring just three minutes later to regain the lead. Neto believes this quick reaction exemplifies the team’s strong mindset in difficult situations.
“It’s one of the best ways to react to conceding,” Neto explained. “Goncalo Ramos' goal came straight after that. The team, once again, managed to stay in the game and defended well.”
Neto acknowledged Portugal’s solid defensive display but admitted there were moments when they could have controlled possession better. Still, he stressed that competing against a high-intensity team like Norway is never easy.
“We were very solid defensively. Perhaps, at some point, we could have controlled the game a little more when we had the ball, but that’s part of it. It’s not easy to come here and control a game against a team playing with such intensity. Both defensively and offensively, we put in a good performance.”
Looking Ahead to Denmark
Portugal aims to keep their unbeaten streak in Group A4 as they prepare to face Denmark in their next match. Holding onto the top spot is key before the international window closes. Meanwhile, Norway looks to recover from this narrow loss as they travel to play Wales later in the week.
