Novak Djokovic Shares Fitness Update Before China Open Debut After US Open Shock
Novak Djokovic Ready for China Open After Early US Open Exit
Novak Djokovic says he is "feeling good" ahead of his first match at the China Open, marking his return to competition after a surprising early loss at the US Open. The Serbian star, seeded sixth in Beijing, will face Nuno Borges in his opening match at this ATP 500 event.
Djokovic's unexpected defeat came at the hands of Mariano Navone in the first round of the US Open late last August. Alongside singles, Djokovic also participated in a mixed doubles match partnering with WTA standout Aryna Sabalenka during the New York tournament.
Fitness and Form Ahead of Beijing
Speaking to reporters in Beijing, Djokovic was asked about his current physical condition and how the past weeks have gone since his US Open exit. He said,
"Yeah, feeling good so far. Let's see. Obviously it's completely different when you're playing an official match compared to practice sets or sessions. But so far so good."
He added that returning to China brings a confidence boost thanks to his strong history there. "My record speaks for itself on Chinese soil," Djokovic noted. "Knowing that, it also brings this dimension of confidence that I really need. Overall, it's been really good so far with the body, the way I'm feeling and playing."
Djokovic’s Remarkable China Open Record
Djokovic boasts an astonishing undefeated record of 29-0 at the China Open in Beijing, having won the title six times before. Despite not playing there since 2015, he expressed genuine happiness about being back.
"At this stage of my career, it's really about tournaments where I enjoy playing, where I've had success, and where I feel welcomed by the fans in a positive way," Djokovic explained. "The history of my results on Chinese soil has been incredible. I haven't played here in 11 years. Previously, my schedule only allowed Shanghai, but this year Beijing was a priority. I'm really glad to be here."
Current Form and Upcoming Challenge
The former world number one has moved up one spot in the ATP rankings to 11th just before the China Open. His 2026 record stands at 14 wins and 7 losses. Djokovic has faced Nuno Borges once before, winning their quarterfinal clash in Athens in 2025 en route to capturing the title there.
