Mexx Meerdink Shines with Two Goals in Netherlands' 2-1 Win Over Serbia

Mexx Meerdink Fulfills Childhood Dream with Stunning Debut

Mexx Meerdink, the young striker from AZ, delivered a remarkable performance by scoring twice as the Netherlands edged Serbia 2-1 in their UEFA Nations League clash in Belgrade. This was Meerdink's first full international start, given a chance after Brian Brobbey pulled out due to injury.

Details of the Match

The game took place at the Rajko Mitic Stadium where Meerdink opened the scoring with a calm penalty in the first half. The hosts responded early in the second half through Luka Jović, leveling the score. However, Meerdink secured the win with a sliding finish off a pass from Guus Til in the 78th minute.

From Substitute to Hero

After the match, Meerdink spoke about his quick rise from coming off the bench against Germany to becoming the hero in Belgrade. He said that despite feeling some pressure before taking the penalty awarded after Crysencio Summerville was fouled, he remained composed and proud to contribute to the victory.

"It is a childhood dream," Meerdink said. "Everything has happened so quickly this week. I felt a little pressure before the penalty, but to score twice and help the team win feels great."

Manager Praises Work Ethic and Team Contribution

Xavi Hernández, the Dutch coach, praised Meerdink not only for his goals but also for his relentless defensive work and pressing without the ball. Positioned as the main attacking outlet, Meerdink repeatedly disrupted Serbia’s play and combined well with teammates Joey Veerman and Guus Til.

Xavi confirmed Meerdink as the backup penalty taker behind Cody Gakpo and highlighted the trust placed in him by the coaching staff, which the forward appreciated.

Looking Ahead

Now focused on the upcoming Nations League match against Greece in Thessaloniki, Meerdink hopes to keep his momentum and hold onto a starting spot in Xavi's lineup. The return fixture against Serbia is scheduled for Sunday in Eindhoven, where Meerdink aims to continue his impressive scoring form.
