Liverpool and Valencia Discuss Loan Move for Harvey Elliott

Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the clock ticks down towards Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.

The Spanish club have pushed to the front of the queue for the 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several sides over the summer, and are now in direct negotiations ahead of the 11pm cut-off on September 1.

Valencia push for late-window deal

Valencia, eyeing creativity and guile between the lines, have made Elliott a priority target and are understood to have already held discussions with the midfielder. He is believed to have spoken with head coach Carlos Corberan about his prospective role at Mestalla and how prominently he would feature.

For Liverpool, a loan would serve a dual purpose. It offers Elliott the regular football that has eluded him over the past 12 months while also protecting his market value. Any move is expected to sit alongside the possibility of a contract extension, with his current deal running until the summer of 2028.

Stalled at Liverpool, stuck at Villa

Elliott has not made a match-day squad under new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola so far this season. That absence comes on the back of a frustrating spell at Aston Villa, where he spent most of last year on loan but rarely saw the pitch.

He did feature briefly for Liverpool at the start of last season, coming off the bench in a 3-2 win at Newcastle. That single appearance had major consequences: it meant he could not move again in the January window, locking him into a Villa stint that never truly got going.

Villa, for their part, managed his minutes with calculation. They were determined not to let him reach the 10-game mark that would have activated a £35m obligation to buy. While Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League and enjoy a memorable campaign, Elliott remained on the fringes, watching the surge from the periphery rather than driving it.

Future in the balance

Back at Liverpool for pre-season, Elliott cut a candid figure during the club’s tour of the United States. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, he admitted he did not yet know where his future lay under Iraola.

“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he said, outlining the tension between loyalty and ambition. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."

Liverpool had been expecting Valencia’s approach before the weekend. That call has now come, and talks over a loan are active.

Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already racked up 149 appearances in red. The next move, whether it takes him to Mestalla or keeps him on Merseyside, will go a long way to deciding whether those appearances become the foundation of a long Anfield career or the prelude to a new chapter abroad.
