Liverpool's Transfer Window: Elliott to Valencia, Barcola In, Gakpo Targeted

Liverpool’s transfer window, already tense and uneven, is veering into even riskier territory.

With days left to do business, two attacking options are edging towards the exit door, while a £100m winger is about to walk through the entrance.

Elliott pushes for Spain as Valencia close in

Harvey Elliott, once tagged as one of Liverpool’s brightest long-term prospects, is now on the brink of a move to Valencia.

After an underwhelming loan spell at Aston Villa last season, the midfielder has slipped down the pecking order at Anfield. Minutes look scarce. A fresh start looks necessary.

Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto first revealed that Valencia were closing in, detailing advanced negotiations and making it clear this is shaping up as a loan deal. He reported that Elliott has already spoken directly with Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola and has told him he wants the move to happen.

That desire has now hardened into something more concrete. Fabrizio Romano reports that Elliott has agreed personal terms with Valencia after positive talks, with negotiations ongoing between the clubs to finalise the agreement. Romano adds that Valencia have made an official approach and are battling at least two other proposals for the 21-year-old, but the La Liga side are pushing hardest and are in active discussions with Elliott’s camp and Liverpool.

For a Liverpool squad already looking thin, it is another body edging out of the door at a time when Iraola can ill afford to lose numbers.

Barcola in, but gaps remain

Liverpool’s summer has been messy. The club have landed big names, but not yet built a balanced squad.

Their long pursuit of PSG winger Bradley Barcola is finally paying off, with the Frenchman set to join for £100m plus add-ons. He will become the fourth arrival of the window, following Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz.

On paper, that is serious investment. On the pitch, question marks remain.

The squad still looks light in key areas. The sense around the club is that another forward, a midfielder and possibly a right-back are still required before the window closes. Iraola is working with a small group, and as more exits loom, the pressure on Liverpool’s recruitment only grows.

Man City turn up heat on Gakpo

Just as Liverpool prepare to welcome Barcola, they may have to fend off a serious move for another attacker.

Cody Gakpo has emerged as a major target for Manchester City. According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, City are “pushing to agree a deal” to sign the Dutch forward and view him as their top attacking target after the departures of Savinho and Omar Marmoush to Tottenham.

City need reinforcements in the final third. Gakpo, who has also attracted strong interest from Spurs this summer, fits the profile: versatile, Premier League ready, and already proven at a high level.

O’Rourke admits the intensity of City’s interest comes as a surprise, but the logic is clear. They are short in attacking areas. Gakpo is available at the right moment. And Liverpool, under pressure to reshape their squad quickly, could be vulnerable to a big offer.

A squad in flux

So Liverpool stand at a crossroads.

Barcola is on his way. Elliott is closing in on Valencia, with a loan all but lined up if the clubs can close the final gap. Gakpo is being hunted by Manchester City, who rarely miss when they truly decide on a target.

Iraola needs depth, not a fire sale. Yet the market is circling his forwards and draining his options. If Elliott and Gakpo go, and the club fail to land the extra reinforcements they clearly need, what kind of season are Liverpool really walking into?
