Liverpool shut the door on Nottingham Forest’s move for Trey Nyoni on deadline week — and they didn’t even leave the chain on.

The Anfield club have rejected a £30million offer from Forest for the 19-year-old midfielder, underlining just how central he has become to Andoni Iraola’s plans before a ball has truly been kicked in anger this season.

Forest’s proposal was structured at £25m guaranteed with a further £5m in add-ons. It is serious money for a teenager with 21 senior appearances. Liverpool’s response was just as serious: no sale, not now.

Nyoni moves from prospect to pillar

Since arriving from Leicester City’s academy three years ago, Nyoni has been eased into the first team with those 21 appearances, but his impact is starting to stretch beyond late cameos. His introduction from the bench against Forest in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Anfield changed the tempo and caught the eye of those watching closely — including the club trying to buy him.

Iraola’s trust, made clear

If Forest’s bid was a test of Liverpool’s resolve, Iraola’s stance helped decide the outcome.

The new head coach has leaned heavily into Nyoni’s potential across pre-season, watching him train daily against established senior players and emerge unfazed. Asked about the teenager before the campaign, Iraola did not bother with guarded language.

“I’m very happy with Trey,” he said. “He has been very good in pre-season, not only in the games, even when he trains with us he’s facing top-level players and he’s at the level. I have no doubts with Trey. He will be very valuable this season for us, hopefully plays a lot and gives the level that I’m seeing every day in training.”

Those are not the words of a coach ready to sign off on a sale days before the deadline. They are the words of a manager planning to build minutes, and maybe matches, around a young midfielder whose ceiling keeps rising.

So Forest pushed. Liverpool pushed back. And as the window ticks towards Tuesday’s cut-off, Nyoni stays where Iraola wants him — at Anfield, on the brink of the biggest season of his career.
