Lamine Yamal on What Barcelona Needs to Capture the Champions League

Lamine Yamal on Barcelona's Champions League Ambitions

Lamine Yamal has made it clear that Barcelona aren't content with just a strong start to their season. The team aims for more, eyeing major trophies beyond early success. The Blaugrana have emerged as serious contenders this campaign, and Yamal feels the squad possesses the quality and unity necessary to challenge for top honors.

Challenges in Europe and the Role of Luck

Speaking to On Sport (via Mundo Deportivo), the young forward reflected on the team's current form, the difficulties of the Champions League, and the mindset instilled by coach Hansi Flick. Yamal emphasized how unpredictable the knockout stages can be, where one bad game might end the entire European journey.

"It all comes down to fate. The Champions League isn't decided in a single match; you can play badly and lose the title. So you need luck, along with experience, and these things build up year after year," he said.

While Barcelona can control their performance levels, small details like injuries, finishing chances, and handling pressure often influence outcomes. Still, Yamal's ambition remains high.

"I hope luck is on our side this year. We're playing to win the title; we're not here just for a stroll. We want to win and bring the trophy back to Barcelona, and God willing, we'll achieve victory this year."

Different Strengths of Raphinha and Lewandowski

Yamal was also asked about the contrast between Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, especially given Raphinha's impressive start as a centre-forward. Rather than picking sides, he pointed out how both players offer distinct advantages to the squad.

"I don’t think it’s a question of better or worse. The team adapts to different players, and each player has different strengths. Robert, for example, stands out for his ability to finish attacking moves, whilst Raphinha is a great passer. Each has their own strengths and skills, and every player stands out for what they do."

Growing Team Chemistry and Winning Mindset

The team's strong start owes much to new signings settling quickly and a deepening understanding among existing players. This blend has helped boost Barcelona’s overall performance and style of play.

"We're in great form at the moment and keen to keep playing entertaining and exciting football. There's been a step up in standard, performance, and quality, both because of the new players who have settled in well and because of the chemistry between the established players, which is growing stronger by the day."

Yamal stressed the unity within the squad, highlighting their shared goal and collective mentality.

"We all play with the same mindset – a winning mindset – and we’ll always do what we believe is best for the team. We’re one big family within the squad, and our aim is always to win."
