Jurgen Klopp Stands Firm on 44-Man Germany Squad After Shock Loss to Greece

Klopp Defends Unconventional 44-Player Roster After Home Defeat

Jurgen Klopp faced heavy criticism following Germany’s surprising defeat against Greece in his first match as national team coach on home soil. Despite the backlash, Klopp remains unwavering in his choice to name two separate squads totaling 44 players for this international window.

After the game, Klopp addressed the controversy directly. "Tomorrow morning the boys who are arriving now will train. They aren’t in sync either, I know that. Nevertheless, from my point of view, there was no alternative but to do it this way (double squad). I stand by it 100 per cent," he said. "Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. We approached it this way and it felt great. That’s what I just told the boys as well. Everything this week was top, except for a large part of this game, to be honest."

Aiming for Long-Term Growth Over Immediate Success

Klopp’s plan involves reshaping the German squad by integrating numerous new players simultaneously. He sees this as a necessary step to accelerate the team's development, even if the immediate results are disappointing.

"The plan is to gather as much information as possible in these two and a half weeks. Imagine if we had simply brought the same team here that also played in the World Cup: I don’t know if the game today would have looked so different. That would have been very bad news," Klopp explained. "Now we are in the process of opening the door for many new faces. The new faces didn’t do much wrong. It’s also not about blaming anyone. Even for the established players, it’s not easy to play with the youngsters. But I saw many positive things that just didn’t lead to a dominant style of play."

Accepting Responsibility for Tactical Issues

The coach openly accepted responsibility for tactical errors during the match against Greece. The team struggled to break down a well-organized Greek defense and lacked sharpness in front of goal.

"A lot. It is part of the process. Absolutely. The line-up, the composition, the substitutions: that is all 100 per cent on me. That we wouldn’t completely tear apart a deep-standing Greek opponent without perhaps lacking a bit of luck in key scenes or having an outstanding goalkeeper there, that was clear. I could have lived with not winning this game by a high margin or not winning at all today, but you mustn’t lose it."

Germany Faces Tough Challenge Ahead

This loss leaves Germany in a difficult spot within Group A2, currently third with only one point after two matches. Greece leads the group undefeated with six points, making them the unexpected frontrunner so far.

Germany’s upcoming fixtures:

  • October 1, 2026 - 21:45: Germany vs Serbia (UEFA Nations League A)
  • October 4, 2026 - 21:45: Greece vs Germany (UEFA Nations League A)

With little time to regroup, Klopp must find a way to unify his team quickly. The next two games will be crucial for Germany to bounce back and show that their rebuilding process remains on course despite this early stumble.
