Juventus Sign Nick Woltemade on Loan from Newcastle

Juventus have struck a deal to sign Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade on a season-long loan, moving quickly to land a striker they believe fits both their football and financial plans.

The 24-year-old will head to Turin for a medical after the clubs agreed a £3.5m fee, with no option to buy included in the agreement. It is a straight loan, a low-risk move for Juve and a clean, time-limited opportunity for Woltemade.

Juventus choose fit over fireworks

Juve had cast the net wide. With Jonathan David poised to join Atletico Madrid on loan, the Italian giants needed another attacking option and had sounded out several names across Europe.

Talks were held with Manchester United over Joshua Zirkzee, whose proposed move to Fiorentina fell through. United, though, pushed for an obligation-to-buy clause. Juventus walked away. They wanted flexibility, not a commitment they might regret in a year’s time.

Woltemade offered exactly that. Cheaper than Zirkzee, no compulsory purchase, and a profile that Juventus believe can slot straight into their forward line. For a club still rebuilding its squad and balance sheet, it ticked every box.

Newcastle’s record signing on the move

The deal also reflects a changing landscape at Newcastle. Woltemade arrived from Stuttgart in August 2025 as a statement signing, a £69m record outlay that underlined the club’s ambition.

On the pitch, his start under new manager Matthias Jaissle has been more subdued. He has started just one of Jaissle’s first three games in charge, used more as an impact option than a guaranteed starter.

He reminded everyone of his quality at the weekend. Coming off the bench in the 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur, Woltemade set up Yoane Wissa’s goal and helped close out a statement victory in north London. It was a glimpse of what he can bring when trusted and given space to work.

Yet Newcastle’s transfer plans have been moving in a different direction.

Fernandez-Pardo arrival opens the door

BBC Sport had already indicated that Newcastle’s pursuit of Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo could unlock Woltemade’s exit. That domino has now fallen.

Fernandez-Pardo flew into Tyneside on Monday evening to finalise a move worth up to £55m, a major attacking investment that inevitably squeezes the minutes available to others. With a new forward arriving at that price, something had to give.

Woltemade, highly rated but no longer central to Jaissle’s immediate plans, became the obvious candidate.

So he heads to Turin, to a club that wanted a forward, not a financial millstone. Juventus get their man on their terms. Newcastle reshape their frontline around a new arrival. And a 24-year-old record signing, caught between eras at St James’ Park, now has a season to prove he belongs at the sharp end of European football.
