Justin Gaethje Stands by Ilia Topuria After UFC Freedom 250 Stoppage

Justin Gaethje Supports Ilia Topuria's Corner Decision at UFC Freedom 250

UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje recently spoke out in defense of his opponent Ilia Topuria, insisting that Topuria did not quit on the stool during their fight at UFC Freedom 250. The bout, held in June, ended with a fourth-round TKO victory for Gaethje after Topuria's corner stopped the fight due to the damage their fighter sustained.

Many fans and fighters have debated whether Topuria gave up on the stool, but Gaethje disagrees. During an appearance on the One Night with Steiny podcast, Gaethje clarified that the decision to halt the contest was made solely by Topuria's coaches, who acted to protect their fighter.

"He didn't quit on the stool, his body was too compromised to continue fighting. He didn't make the call, his coaches made the call because they're there to protect him. My coaches are in my corner to protect me in those times," Gaethje explained.

Potential Rematch and Future Fights

The question now is whether a rematch between Gaethje and Topuria will happen next. Although Arman Tsarukyan has a stronger case for a title shot due to his six consecutive wins, the UFC often prioritizes high-profile matchups. If the promotion deems a Gaethje-Topuria rematch the biggest fight in the lightweight division, Tsarukyan might have to wait for his opportunity.

Another factor is Gaethje's own future in the sport. Despite winning, he suffered significant damage in the fight with Topuria and has yet to decide if he'll retire or return for another bout. The UFC is giving him time to consider his options before scheduling any upcoming fights.
