Julian Alvarez: From Star to Outcast at Atletico Madrid

The mood at the Metropolitano has curdled. What was once the house Julian Alvarez was supposed to lead has become the stage for a bitter stand-off with the man who built it.

Reports in Spain say Diego Simeone is “absolutely furious” with the Argentine forward, whose strong links to a sensational move to Barcelona have detonated inside an Atletico Madrid dressing room that believed he was the centrepiece of their future.

From protected star to dressing-room outcast

La Liga commentator Phil Kitromilides lifted the lid on the situation in an interview with CBS Sports, outlining just how raw the emotions are behind the scenes.

“What I’m hearing is that the dressing room is very, very disappointed with him,” he said. “And what I’ve been told by someone who knows the situation is that Diego Simeone can’t even look at him. Like, Diego Simeone is furious, absolutely furious with Julian Alvarez. And rightly so.”

That fury has roots. Deep ones.

Simeone did more than pick Alvarez. He shielded him. When the former Manchester City forward went close to four months without a goal last season, the Atleti coach never once turned publicly. No digs in press conferences. No pointed substitutions. No leaks questioning his attitude.

Kitromilides underlined that loyalty: “This is his guy, this is someone who he defended publicly, consistently, last season, when Alvarez went nearly four months without scoring. He was never questioned by Simeone, never a bad word from Simeone, constantly backed and supported 100 per cent. This is their most important player, their franchise player. The whole project is built around Julian Alvarez.”

That is the crux of Simeone’s anger. Alvarez wasn’t just another forward; he was the project. The long-term reference point for how Atleti would evolve.

Now, with Barcelona circling, that project feels like it is being ripped up from the inside.

Training no-shows and a firm Atleti line

Alvarez’s absence from training sessions last week poured petrol on the fire. Each missed day was read as another step towards the Camp Nou. Each no-show chipped away at the idea that this relationship could simply be patched up with a handshake and a press release.

He did report back on Sunday, rejoining his teammates and stepping back into a workplace thick with tension. The walls may be the same, but the atmosphere has changed.

Atletico, though, are refusing to blink. The club’s stance remains hard: Alvarez is under contract, and they intend to keep him. Those close to the hierarchy insist the message to Barcelona is clear – this is not a deal that can be forced through on the cheap or on the clock.

Barcelona, for their part, have not hidden their admiration for the Argentina international. Yet even within the Catalan club there is an acceptance of the scale of the task. The finances, the timing, Atletico’s position – the combination makes Alvarez a near-impossible signing in this window.

So Barça have started to look elsewhere.

Barca pivot towards Gabriel Jesus

As the Alvarez saga drags on, Barcelona have shifted their gaze to north London. Reports suggest they are closing in on a move for Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus, a player seen as more attainable both financially and politically than prising Alvarez out of Simeone’s grip.

Jesus would not arrive as a consolation prize so much as a pragmatic solution. For Barcelona, it is a way to strengthen now rather than chase a fantasy that may never materialise. For Atletico, that potential deal is a small relief – one less external force tugging at their “franchise player”.

Yet the shadow of Barcelona still hangs over Alvarez’s every step in Madrid. Every touch in training. Every glance from a teammate. Every look, or non-look, from Simeone.

A fragile reintegration

Despite the rupture, Alvarez is expected to be named in the squad for Atletico’s upcoming fixture. The club needs his goals. It also needs to show that it can absorb this kind of shock without imploding.

Behind closed doors, officials are working to project calm. The line is simple: Alvarez is a professional, and they expect him to act like one.

Mateu Alemany summed up that position: “The plan is very clear. We hope he’ll be back in the team quickly and available for the next LaLiga match.”

Hope, though, is not the same as trust. Not anymore.

Atletico built their future around Julian Alvarez. Simeone defended him when the goals dried up and the criticism swelled. Now, with the relationship strained and Barcelona’s interest still lingering in the background, the question is no longer whether Alvarez can lead this project.

It’s whether the Metropolitano will ever truly embrace him again.
