Holger Rune’s First ATP Tour Match Post-Achilles Injury Set at Japan Open
Holger Rune Returns to ATP Tour at Japan Open
After nearly a year sidelined by an Achilles tendon injury, Holger Rune is ready to step back onto the ATP Tour stage. His first match since the injury will take place at the Japan Open in Tokyo, following a promising comeback at the Davis Cup where he secured two wins for Denmark against Bulgaria.
Rune last competed at the tour level during the Stockholm Open in October 2025 before his injury. Now ranked 188th worldwide, down from a peak of fourth, the 23-year-old Dane aims to climb back up the rankings starting with this event.
Japan Open Draw and Potential Opponents
Rune's opening round will be his debut meeting against French player Kyrian Jacquet. If Rune advances, he faces a challenging second-round match against either Casper Ruud or Luciano Darderi.
Should Rune reach the quarterfinals, possible opponents include Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti, both players he has previously defeated. The defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz, looms as the likely semifinal hurdle.
If Rune pushes through to the final, he could meet either US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe or rising star Rafael Jodar, who is just 20 years old.
Rune’s History and Ranking Points at Stake
This marks Rune’s third appearance at the Japan Open, where he has shown strong performances. In 2024, he reached the semifinals but narrowly lost to Arthur Fils. Last year, Rune made it to the quarterfinals, meaning he is defending 100 ATP points at this tournament.
Beyond Tokyo, Rune will also defend 200 points at the Shanghai Masters, where he reached the quarterfinals in 2025. Additionally, the Stockholm Open remains significant, as he must defend 100 points earned from a semifinal run before his injury there.
