Why Gjivai Zechiel Could Shine at Arsenal or Chelsea
Gjivai Zechiel has caught the eye with a remarkable start to the 2026-27 season at Feyenoord, drawing interest from Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea. The Dutch midfielder, now 22, worked his way into the first team in August 2023 after five years in the Feyenoord academy. His breakthrough didn’t happen instantly; by January 2025, he had only made 11 Eredivisie appearances.
To gain experience, Feyenoord loaned him to Sparta Rotterdam, where Zechiel played regularly for four months, scoring or assisting three times in 13 games. This led to a higher-profile loan to Utrecht, who finished fourth in the Eredivisie and secured Europa League qualification. Under coach Ron Jans, Zechiel flourished, contributing to 20 goals and assists across 50 matches.
"In my eyes, he can grow into a top player," Jans told De Telegraaf. "I certainly think he can break through at Feyenoord. He deserves a chance."
Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Feyenoord’s current manager, has given Zechiel that chance since taking over in June, calling the young talent "the future of Dutch football." The possibility of a move abroad looms, with reports linking him to Arsenal and Chelsea.
Transformation on the Field
Zechiel’s growth accelerated at Utrecht when Jans shifted him to a more attacking No.8 role, allowing him to enter the box more freely. Once more of a tempo-controller, he turned into an offensive threat, scoring in three straight Eredivisie games against Go Ahead Eagles, PSV, and Telstar. For the Netherlands U21s, he netted twice in a European qualifier against Norway. His ability to find space and finish decisively forced Feyenoord to take notice.
His earlier struggles partly stemmed from clashing with then-U19 coach Robin van Persie during the 2023-24 season. Zechiel admitted to NOS that he was a bit of a troublemaker and had difficulty controlling his reactions back then, even apologizing for his behavior.
Staying at Feyenoord Despite Interest
When Van Bronckhorst arrived, Zechiel briefly considered a move to French side Lille, who bid up to €17 million. He revealed to Voetbal International that the transfer seemed better for his sporting development at the time. However, Feyenoord declined all offers, convinced by Van Bronckhorst’s vision of Zechiel as a key player.
Zechiel rewarded the faith by starting every Eredivisie match this season and playing in Champions League fixtures, including against Barcelona and Como. His tally includes five league goals and four assists so far, highlighted by a brace in a 5-2 win over SC Cambuur. Feyenoord sits atop the Eredivisie unbeaten.
The midfielder earned the Eredivisie Player of the Month award for August, leading the league in goals (3) and shots on target (7). Former Ajax midfielder Lasse Schone praised his decisiveness and predicted bigger clubs will come calling if he keeps up this form.
Zechiel’s confidence shows in moments like his stunning goal against Como, where he controlled a pass on the edge of the box and fired an unstoppable shot. Even in tough losses, such as 5-1 to Barcelona, he actively sought to influence the game.
Feyenoord moved quickly to secure him until 2029, with technical director Devy Rigaux stating Zechiel feels committed and eager to succeed at the club. Zechiel expressed gratitude for the trust and says he is focused on growing further at Feyenoord.
International Debut and Praise
New Netherlands coach Xavi handed Zechiel his first senior call-up after watching him in Feyenoord’s dominant 5-0 win over Utrecht. Xavi described him as a talented, technically skilled player who moves well without the ball.
Zechiel debuted in a 2-2 draw with Greece, coming off the bench and contributing indirectly to the equalizer. In the next game against Serbia, he played 33 minutes, completing 22 of 24 passes, making 15 ball carries, and winning duels. Xavi called his performance "great" and said Zechiel could become very important for the national team.
Premier League Future?
Zechiel looks set to outgrow Feyenoord soon. His style suits the Premier League, where Mikel Arteta of Arsenal values midfielders who are technically gifted and can handle pressure. Zechiel would complement players like Martin Odegaard, Bruno Guimaraes, Declan Rice, and Martin Zubimendi, offering creativity, efficiency, and goal threat.
At Chelsea, he could work well alongside Moises Caicedo, feeding forwards such as Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro with his clever runs and quick passes.
The main concern is his physicality; though intelligent defensively, he isn’t the strongest tackler and can be pushed off the ball. To thrive in England’s tough environment, he’ll need to add muscle and adapt to the physical demands.
Zechiel learns from leaders like Denzel Dumfries and Virgil van Dijk, aiming to develop his own leadership qualities. His blend of ambition and humility suggests he will be a valuable asset for any top club, with a potential bidding war expected in 2027 if he keeps progressing.
