Gianni Infantino Apologizes for FIFA Forward Enterprise Failure Ahead of Presidential Vote
Gianni Infantino Addresses FIFA Forward Enterprise Collapse at Council Meeting
At the FIFA Council session in Zurich, Switzerland, Gianni Infantino sought to close the chapter on the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan. The initiative, which stirred widespread criticism following its leak after the 2026 World Cup, was officially abandoned.
The FFE plan proposed creating a business entity to manage commercial rights for upcoming World Cups, with shares sold to investors including American entrepreneur Josh Kushner. Despite an initial agreement, the plan faced global opposition from FIFA confederations and officials who viewed it as selling football's future to the highest bidder and criticized the lack of transparency during its development.
Infantino's Apology and Council Reaction
Ahmed Yahya, FIFA Council member and president of the Mauritania Football Association, shared that Infantino apologized to the Executive Committee for the mishandling of the proposal. Yahya described the discussion as responsible, leading to shelving the matter and encouraging focus on football’s positives moving forward.
"After finally withdrawing this proposal, President Gianni Infantino apologised to the members of the Executive Committee," said Yahya. "The Executive Committee is looking ahead and seeking solutions with a positive attitude, focusing on what football offers today."
Following the meeting, Infantino told reporters that the main topic was the FFE project. He admitted mistakes in communication and consultation but stressed it was only a proposal, not a finalized deal. The intent was to boost investments into member associations without cutting existing funding, aiming to create more success stories like those witnessed during the 2026 World Cup.
"It's important to remember it was just a proposal, and in no way a done deal," Infantino stated. "Football is for everyone."
FIFA's Confirmation and Support Ahead of Election
FIFA confirmed in a statement that the FFE plan has been permanently withdrawn and will not return in any form. The meeting also highlighted Infantino's plan to distribute $6 billion among FIFA's 211 member associations positively.
Yahya voiced strong backing for Infantino in the upcoming presidential election, pointing to successful initiatives like expanding the World Cup to 48 teams. He emphasized Infantino's commitment to promoting football globally and involving everyone.
"I am certain that Gianni Infantino is the right president. The majority want Gianni Infantino to stay," Yahya said.
Other Topics and Mixed Reactions
The three-and-a-half-hour meeting also covered issues such as US striker Folarin Balogun's suspended red card from the World Cup, the FIFA Peace Prize, and funding for national associations, according to the BBC.
Not all council members were satisfied. Bernd Neuendorf, head of the German FA and FIFA Council member, expressed disappointment over the lack of convincing answers during the discussions.
