Gabriel Jesus Explains Rejecting Flamengo Before Joining Barcelona
Gabriel Jesus Turned Down Flamengo Out of Loyalty to Palmeiras
Former Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus revealed why he declined an offer from Brazilian giants Flamengo during the summer transfer window. Instead of returning to Brazil, the 29-year-old forward chose to move from Arsenal to Barcelona on deadline day.
Flamengo’s Approach and Jesus’ Decision
Speaking with TV Bandeirantes, the Brazilian international disclosed that Flamengo approached him after it became clear he was no longer in Mikel Arteta's plans at Arsenal. Despite a successful period at Manchester City earlier in his career, injuries affected his time in London, prompting interest from clubs across Europe and South America.
Strong Ties to Palmeiras Influenced His Choice
Jesus came through the youth ranks at Palmeiras from 2013 to 2015, earning several awards including the 2015 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A Best Newcomer and the 2016 Bola de Ouro as Palmeiras won their first league title in 22 years. Over 83 appearances, he scored 28 goals and provided nine assists before moving to England.
When Flamengo showed interest, Jesus explained his refusal: "They wanted to talk to me, but I politely said: I really appreciate the contact, but just as there are players from Flamengo’s youth academy that want to return, I’m also a product of Palmeiras youth system." His roots with Palmeiras stopped him from entertaining Flamengo’s offer.
Staying in Europe with Barcelona
Rather than returning to South America early, Jesus signed a three-year contract with Barcelona until June 2029. While he has no plans to leave Spain soon, he emphasized that Palmeiras will be the only Brazilian club he considers if he returns home someday: "I am Palmeiras, my mind is Palmeiras, 100% Palmeiras in a possible return. I don’t know when."
Early Impact at Barcelona
Jesus quickly found form in Spain, contributing four goals and one assist in his first eight matches of the 2026-27 season across all competitions. Remaining fit will be key as he aims to secure a regular starting spot in Barcelona’s attack and challenge for trophies.
