Florian Wirtz Responds to Jamie Carragher's Criticism After Key Role in Liverpool Win

Florian Wirtz has pushed back against the harsh critiques from pundits like Jamie Carragher after playing a crucial part in Liverpool's recent win over Brighton at Anfield. Despite facing pressure since his big-money move, the German midfielder insists he stays focused on his game.

Wirtz Faces Pressure but Remains Unfazed

The £116.5 million signing from Bayer Leverkusen has been under constant scrutiny due to his price tag and inconsistent form since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2025. At 23, Wirtz refuses to let criticism affect him, emphasizing that he concentrates solely on his football.

He was instrumental in Liverpool’s breakthrough against Brighton, scoring a powerful shot that deflected off Pascal Gross to open the scoring. Later, Bradley Barcola assisted Alexander Isak for the final goal that sealed the victory.

"Maybe I’m just an interesting guy, you know?" Wirtz joked during a post-match interview with the BBC. "I just play my football, and if people want to talk or judge me, that’s their job. I’m not focusing on that. I just want to play football, and beyond that, I cannot do more."

Praise for Team’s Dominant First Half

Wirtz highlighted the squad’s mindset and strong start, especially in the first 30 minutes. He pointed out how Liverpool controlled duels, created many chances, and combined attacking pressure with solid defending to finish the half confidently.

"We had the right mentality today. In the first half or first 30 minutes, we were on top and really good in the duels, creating a lot of chances. It’s good to end the half and defend well. I’m really happy about that," he said.

He added, "It’s enjoyable now. Things weren’t great last month, so I’m even happier it’s going well. We’re moving towards where we want to be and should keep this up."

Carragher’s Critique of Wirtz

Jamie Carragher has been vocal about his doubts regarding Wirtz's impact at Liverpool. After a loss to Manchester City earlier in the season, Carragher questioned whether Wirtz deserved his place in the team, claiming the midfielder had ample time to adapt.

"There is no way Wirtz should be playing ahead of Gravenberch. What Florian Wirtz is doing for Liverpool is not enough right now. He’s played 55, 60 games for Liverpool. He shouldn’t be in the Liverpool team right now. I don’t want to hammer Liverpool players, but we’re not saying this after five or ten games, we’re saying it after 50-60 games," Carragher stated.

Injury Concern During the Match

The win was slightly overshadowed when Wirtz had to leave the pitch early due to an injury scare. After treatment on the field, he was substituted in the 65th minute for Trey Nyoni, worrying fans at Anfield.

Head coach Andoni Iraola provided an update, revealing Wirtz suffered a minor ankle twist. With fixtures coming thick and fast, any injury could pose a challenge.

"Unfortunately, he had to leave the pitch with a small twist of the ankle. It doesn’t look very big but we are playing every three days, so we need to see where he is," Iraola explained.
