Cesc Fabregas Calls for Composure After Como's Stunning 4-1 Win Over Manchester United in Champions League
Cesc Fabregas, head coach of Como, encouraged his players to stay grounded following their impressive 4-1 win against Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The Spanish manager watched his Serie A side dominate at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, placing significant pressure on visiting boss Michael Carrick.
A Historic Triumph for Como
Fabregas cautioned against overconfidence after Como dismantled the Red Devils by three goals on home turf. Having already defeated RB Leipzig 4-1 earlier in the competition, Como became the first Italian team to score four or more goals in their opening two home matches of a debut UEFA campaign. They also joined AC Milan as only the second Italian club to beat Manchester United by a margin of three or more goals in European competition.
Como's Fearless Approach Dominates Visitors
Early chances defined the match: after Diogo Dalot missed an opportunity within the first 90 seconds, Nico Paz opened the scoring just 118 seconds in, cutting onto his left foot and curling a shot past goalkeeper Senne Lammens. At 22 years and 43 days old, Paz became the second-youngest South American scorer against United in the Champions League, trailing only Lionel Messi's record from the 2009 final.
In response, Carrick made halftime substitutions, replacing £110 million signings Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos with Carlos Baleba and Amad Diallo. Despite this, Paz set up Tasos Douvikas for Como's second goal, capitalizing on Matthijs de Ligt's rare mistake in his first match after 325 days out. Later, Paz intercepted a pass from Baleba to add a third goal in the 57th minute.
"I'm very happy. I think it's a historic night for the club, and we're very happy. It was a good performance. The boys competed really well and played well, so we need to keep going and keep pushing," said Fabregas after the match.
Fabregas shared the message he gave his injury-hit squad before kickoff: "This morning, we spoke about certain things, about certain principles and about who we are. We need to play with bravery and without fear, and I think that's the most important thing. The boys showed great quality and great character. We always talk about character and everything, but today the boys also played with a lot of quality."
Como Quietly Defies European Expectations
Goalkeeper Jean Butez denied Diallo, and substitute Kaiki Bruno provided a perfect cross for Jacobo Ramon to head in Como’s fourth goal at 76 minutes. Lammens prevented Paz from completing a hat-trick, while Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation for United after coming on for captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fabregas downplayed claims that other European clubs will now fear facing Como. "I wouldn't say that other European teams are afraid of Como. Believe me, we have a lot of respect for all the clubs. We are new to this competition, so, as I said, we need to keep our feet on the ground, keep working, keep pedalling, and then see where the future takes us."
Pressure Builds on Old Trafford
Missing nine key players through injury, Manchester United extended their winless streak to seven matches. Their promising draw against rivals Leeds United on Sunday quickly faded into disappointment. At full-time, Carrick repeatedly apologized to the traveling fans, recalling Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s apology after a 4-1 defeat to Watford in 2021, which led to his dismissal shortly after.
