Enzo Maresca Reveals Luis Enrique Said PSG Were 'Lucky' in Champions League Win Over Man City
PSG Dominates Manchester City Despite Manager’s Claim of Luck
Manchester City endured a tough night as they hosted defending Champions League champions Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium during the 2026/27 group stage. After opening their campaign with a 2-0 away win against Porto, City aimed to maintain a perfect record in Europe but found themselves overwhelmed.
PSG cruised to a 4-2 victory, establishing a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime and never looking back. City fought hard in the second half, scoring two goals, yet it wasn’t enough to threaten the visitors’ control.
Match Highlights
- PSG scorers: Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, Manuel Akliouche, Vitinha
- Man City scorer: Erling Haaland (two goals)
- Shots by Man City: 27 total, 9 on target
- Penalty area touches: Man City 52, PSG 17
- PSG’s expected goals (xG): 1.83 despite scoring 4 goals
Though City dominated possession in the penalty area and fired numerous attempts, their finishing lacked precision. PSG displayed clinical efficiency, particularly with assists from Doue and finishing by Dembele. Vitinha also impressed with his midfield performance.
Maresca Shares Luis Enrique’s Post-Match Thoughts
After the game, Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca revealed a striking comment from PSG coach Luis Enrique. Maresca said Enrique mentioned that PSG were somewhat fortunate to score as many goals as they did.
“We struggled in the first half because we conceded two goals, and when you are inside the pitch, you know that it's already difficult against them, and then you are thinking 'oh my god we are 2-0 down now,' so it becomes even more difficult,” Maresca said.“But the second half I think we created enough chances, and we deserve something more, to be honest.“But Luis [Enrique] also at the end told me at the end that they had been quite lucky during the 95 minutes, but again we lost and we can learn from that and move on.”
This admission contrasts with the clear dominance shown on the scoreboard, though the xG statistics suggest there was an element of fortune for PSG. Still, their skill and tactical control were undeniable on the night.
