Chelsea signs Ahanor but loans him to Crystal Palace

Chelsea have secured their next defensive project – but Crystal Palace will see him first.

The Blues have finalised a deal for 18-year-old defender Ahanor, agreeing personal terms and completing the formalities after giving the teenager permission to travel to London for a medical. The plan looked straightforward: sign, announce, integrate.

Instead, Chelsea have chosen a different route. Ahanor is heading across the capital to Crystal Palace on loan.

The structure is unusual but deliberate. Officially, Ahanor will join Palace on loan from Atalanta, with Chelsea then set to bring him to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2027. It is a staggered move that underlines how aggressively Chelsea are stockpiling young talent, while trusting Palace to provide the Premier League minutes he will need.

There is a wrinkle. Chelsea have already sent one player to Selhurst Park this summer. Axel Disasi moved to the Eagles on a season-long loan without any option or obligation to buy, filling a major hole in Palace’s defence and tightening the relationship between the two London clubs. That existing deal shapes the registration and timing of Ahanor’s move, forcing Chelsea into a more creative, long-term arrangement.

Palace, though, are getting a serious prospect.

Ahanor came through the Genoa academy and has already broken into the Italy senior set-up, earning two caps this year after a rapid rise through the ranks. Last season he made 28 Serie A appearances for Atalanta, a sizeable workload for a teenager in one of Europe’s most demanding tactical leagues, and he tasted the Champions League for the first time in September.

Those numbers explain the scramble. An 18-year-old defender with top-flight and Champions League experience, already trusted at international level, does not stay under the radar for long. Palace gain an immediate boost to their back line; Chelsea park a future first-team option in a competitive environment where his development will be closely watched.

While one eye is on 2027, Chelsea’s recruitment team are busy in the here and now.

The club remain keen on Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and are exploring a move for the 22-year-old. That interest comes at a delicate moment for Enzo Fernandez, whose future is uncertain after he missed a second consecutive Chelsea match amid strong attention from Manchester City.

Fernandez sat out the 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend, a thriller that only sharpened questions about his situation. Asked to explain the Argentine’s absence, head coach Xabi Alonso was blunt.

"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," he said.

Chelsea are reshaping their squad on multiple timelines: Ahanor for tomorrow, Camara potentially for the immediate battle, and a decision looming over one of their marquee midfielders. Palace, meanwhile, find themselves at the heart of that strategy, entrusted with a defender who could yet anchor Chelsea’s back line in the next era.

If Ahanor thrives in south London, the question will not be whether he is ready for Chelsea in 2027 – but whether they can afford to wait that long.
