Cason Wallace Signs Five-Year, $139 Million Extension with Oklahoma City Thunder
Cason Wallace and the Thunder Agree on Contract Extension
Cason Wallace and the Oklahoma City Thunder have reached an agreement on a five-year, $139 million extension to his rookie contract, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
This deal came before Monday's deadline for players from the 2023 NBA Draft class to sign rookie scale extensions. Without this agreement, Wallace would have played the final year of his rookie deal under a team option and then become a restricted free agent in the 2026-27 offseason.
Securing a Defensive Pillar
The Thunder have locked down a key defensive piece as they aim for their second NBA title in three seasons. Wallace, known for his perimeter defense, has grown into one of the league's top defenders at his position.
Wallace’s Growth and Role Expansion
Selected 10th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft out of Kentucky, Wallace has steadily increased his impact each season. He started 13 games as a rookie, moved up to 43 starts in 2024-25, and played a crucial role in Oklahoma City's championship run that year. Last season, he started 58 games and is expected to be a full-time starter this upcoming season, building on his average of 26.6 minutes per game from 2025-26.
2025-26 Season Stats
- Games Played: 77
- Points per Game: 8.6
- Rebounds per Game: 3.1
- Assists per Game: 2.6
- Steals per Game: 1.9
- Blocks per Game: 0.4
- Three-Point Shooting: 35.1% on 3.7 attempts per game
Team Moves and Future Outlook
The Thunder traded away 3-and-D specialist Luguentz Dort to the Atlanta Hawks during the offseason, signaling their confidence in Wallace to take on a bigger role. Now, with this extension, the franchise has secured its entire starting five with long-term contracts.
The team’s core moving forward includes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein, and now Cason Wallace. All are signed through at least the 2028-29 season as the Thunder look to maintain their championship window.
