Bayern Munich Coach Vincent Kompany Hospitalized After Training Collapse
Bayern Munich were jolted on Friday when head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing in the aftermath of a training session in Munich.
The 40-year-old was watching his players go through their work when he suddenly went down, the club confirmed. Medical staff moved quickly, and Bayern later announced that Kompany had been taken to hospital for further checks and would remain there under observation.
Kompany will undergo comprehensive examinations at the hospital and remain under medical care.
His coaching staff have stepped in to handle day-to-day work on the training ground and match preparation while he recovers.
Sport director Max Eberl underlined that the club will not rush their coach back.
Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority.
Eberl said, “We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure that he recovers quickly. Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs.”
The incident comes at the end of a draining week for the Belgian. Bayern had already revealed that Kompany was suffering from a viral infection that forced him to miss a training session and a press conference on Tuesday. Even so, he returned to the touchline on Wednesday night, taking his place in the dugout for Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League.
After that match, Kompany admitted he had tried to push through the illness and ignored warning signs from his body. Two days later, those signals could no longer be brushed aside.
Bayern now face the prospect of preparing for Sunday’s Bundesliga trip to Freiburg without their head coach on the training pitch. The staff around him will carry the load for as long as required, but the sight of Kompany being hospitalized is a stark reminder of the toll this season is already taking.
