Barcelona and Lamine Yamal Face PSG Test in Champions League Showdown

Barcelona's Unstoppable Run Meets PSG Challenge

Lamine Yamal and Barcelona are riding a wave of success as they head into Tuesday's Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. But this clash at Parc des Princes will reveal just how strong the Catalans really are.

The Blaugrana have won all 11 games they've played so far this season. Yet, can they extend their perfect streak against PSG on their home turf?

Last Season’s Encounter: A Reality Check

Just over a year ago, before facing PSG, Pedri claimed Barcelona were the world’s best team. Meanwhile, the returning Lamine Yamal vowed to prove it by winning the Champions League. The very next night at Montjuic, PSG reminded them otherwise. Despite missing five key players including their main forwards, PSG overturned Barcelona with a 2-1 win thanks to a late goal from Goncalo Ramos.

"If you’re the best, you have to show it on the pitch, not talk," said Ramos. "We’re the European champions; I can’t say more than that."

PSG's victory was a firm statement after Barca’s confident pre-match words. After the defeat, coach Hansi Flick admitted, "Today, there’s no point in saying we’re at the same level as PSG."

Lessons from the Loss

The defeat did not derail Barcelona’s season. They went on to win La Liga by eight points over Real Madrid, sealing the title with a win at Camp Nou on May 10. But the manner of Ramos' 90th-minute winner frustrated Flick. Losing composure and shape at critical moments had been a recurring problem.

"When defending at 1-1, you must be smarter at the end. We have to be structured, cover all spaces, hold out for 90 minutes," Flick said. "Everyone must defend, attack, be sharp with the ball, exploit spaces, and participate in possession. At PSG, they know how to do this. These are lessons to learn."

Despite their attacking prowess, Barca’s defensive issues lingered through the 2025-26 campaign. This was clear as they bowed out in the Champions League quarter-finals, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid without a single clean sheet in 12 games.

Have Transfers Fixed the Problems?

This season shows signs of change. Offensively, Barcelona look even stronger, averaging 4.4 goals per game.

Though they missed out on signing Julian Alvarez, Raphinha has shone up front, filling the gap left by Robert Lewandowski. Gabriel Jesus is also proving a promising alternative off the bench compared to Ferran Torres, who moved to PSG in August.

  • Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi compete for two attacking spots.
  • Lamine Yamal and Raphinha are locked in as starters.

This depth means coach Flick always has potential game-changers ready to come off the bench.

Defensive Doubts Remain

Barcelona have scored 48 goals over 11 straight wins in all competitions but still struggle defensively. Their last Champions League clean sheet was back in April 2025.

Securing Rodri, regarded as the world's top defensive midfielder, was a major boost. His ability to keep possession and shield the backline addresses what Barca lacked against PSG last year.

The defeat wasn’t just about high defensive lines being exposed. It was midfield battles lost, with players like Pedri and Frenkie de Jong exhausted chasing shadows. With Rodri added, Barca should hold onto the ball better.

Yet, the defense still looks fragile.

Testing Squad Depth at the Back

Signing Joao Cancelo provides cover in both full-back roles, which matters since Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia will miss the trip to Paris. Still, Pau Cubarsi’s injury risks a collapse in defense if further problems arise.

Barcelona remain confident. Nuno Mendes, one of the few players to consistently trouble Yamal, is sidelined with a thigh injury. This gives the young star a prime chance to make an impact.

Lamine Yamal openly believes he deserves the Ballon d’Or but admits his missing piece is a Champions League winners medal.

Coach Luis Enrique noted, "The new format makes many league-phase results less decisive. The real competition starts in April, and the teams there will fight for the trophy."

Still, this match feels significant. Barcelona look sharper now than when they last met PSG and seem capable of matching their rivals this season. The pressure is on to prove it on the pitch because last year showed words mean little without action.
