Bangladesh Rest Taskin Ahmed for Afghanistan Test
Bangladesh have chosen caution over firepower, resting pace spearhead Taskin Ahmed for their one-off Test against Afghanistan in the UAE, as the selectors fix their gaze firmly on the World Test Championship road ahead.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Saturday named a 15-man squad for the match, to be played from October 9 to 13, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto leading a group that blends familiar Test hands with two batters coming in on the back of serious domestic form.
Taskin Protected for WTC Push
Taskin’s omission is strategic, not punitive. He remains central to Bangladesh’s red-ball plans, but with a demanding home schedule looming, the BCB have opted to manage his workload rather than squeeze one more Test out of his body.
“We have decided to give rest to Taskin from this Test match. As we are prioritizing the Test Championship so we are looking forward to getting his full service during the Test series against West Indies,” chief selector Habibul Bashar explained.
The plan is clear: keep Taskin fresh for the two-match series against West Indies at home, where World Test Championship points will carry far more weight than a one-off neutral-venue contest against Afghanistan. He could still feature in the ODI series against West Indies to sharpen his rhythm, but the heavy lifting in whites has been ring-fenced.
Hridoy and Jaker Ride the Form Wave
If Taskin’s rest was expected, the story at the other end of the squad sheet is about opportunity.
Wicketkeeper-batter Amite Hasan has been left out, with Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy returning to the Test fold. Both arrive with runs behind them, and not just any runs.
Hridoy forced his way back into the conversation with a towering, unbeaten 350 for Bangladesh A against South Africa A in Potchefstroom. Innings like that do not get ignored, especially for a side still searching for long-term stability in its middle order.
Jaker, too, made his case in the same match, scoring 94 while Hridoy dominated the headlines. His route back has been more circuitous. He was initially drafted into the Test squad for the Australia series when Litton Das was an injury doubt, only to step aside once Litton recovered in time for the tour. His last Test appearance came in July 2025 against Sri Lanka in Galle; now he returns with form, and with a vacancy created by Amite’s omission.
“We have replaced Amite Hasan with Jaker Ali taking his form into consideration,” Bashar said, underlining a selection call based on recent output rather than reputation.
With Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Kumer Das already in the squad, Bangladesh suddenly have depth in their wicketkeeping and middle-order options. It gives Shanto and the team management tactical flexibility, especially on what could be abrasive, slow surfaces in the UAE.
Bowling Resources Managed, Rana on the Mend
Taskin’s absence shifts the pace burden onto Hasan Mahmud, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury and Shoriful Islam, backed by the spin pairing of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam. It is a group capable of doing damage, but the long game is what really shapes these choices.
That long game also explains the careful handling of Nahid Rana.
The young quick has been sidelined since July with a Grade 2 side strain and continues his rehabilitation. There is no rush, no gamble. With four significant home Tests in this World Test Championship cycle – two against West Indies, two against England – the board want him fully fit when the stakes rise.
“Rana will be available from October 10. We have four important WTC matches at home ahead of us, so we want to keep him ready for the two-match Test series against the West Indies and England,” Bashar noted.
The timing is tight: Rana becomes available one day into the Afghanistan Test. Bangladesh, though, are clearly thinking beyond the UAE. They want him steaming in on home pitches, with a Kookaburra in hand and WTC points on the line.
Shanto’s Test Core Takes Shape
Around all these moving parts, the spine of the Test side remains intact. Shanto leads a batting group featuring Tanzid Hasan, Shadman Islam, Soumya Sarkar and Mominul Haque Showrab at the top and in the middle, with the experience of Mushfiqur and Litton, and the fresh force of Hridoy and Jaker waiting to press their claims.

A neutral-venue Test against Afghanistan in the UAE will not decide a World Test Championship campaign. What it can do is sharpen combinations, test bench strength and offer Hridoy, Jaker and the supporting quicks a stage.
Bangladesh have made their choice: protect the spearheads, reward the form players, and treat this lone Test as a stepping stone to a far more demanding home season. Whether that gamble pays off will become clear when West Indies and England come calling.
