Andy Roddick Comments on Andre Agassi's Take on Alexander Zverev After Laver Cup

Team Europe Triumphs Over Team World at 2026 Laver Cup

Alexander Zverev clinched the victory for Team Europe by defeating Learner Tien in straight sets, helping secure a 13-5 win over Team World at the 2026 Laver Cup.

Andre Agassi’s Remarks About Zverev

Following the match, Team World captain Andre Agassi took a jab at Zverev, the world number two. He congratulated him on a remarkable year and his first Grand Slam title but poked fun at his mindset:

"Congratulations, Sascha, on a crazy year. Seeing you win [a Grand Slam] for the first time, I know how important that was to you, and it was important to me too, because I could start listening to your press conferences again. You weren’t like, ‘Waah, why do I always lose? Why am I the third best in the world? I suck.’ But then you win, and it’s like, ‘I’m only a one-time Slam champion; I’ve got to do it again.’"

Andy Roddick Responds to Agassi’s Comments

Former world number one Andy Roddick shared his thoughts during his podcast Served with Andy Roddick, reflecting on Agassi's mix of humor and heartfelt words directed at his team after the loss.

"Andre has an unbelievable ability to shift gears very quickly. He can go from roasting Zverev to a heartfelt moment with his team. His team loves playing for him, no doubt about it."

Roddick also highlighted how Zverev handles criticism well:

"Say what you want about Sascha; there are many opinions. From my experience, if you go after him, he usually takes it well. I’ve criticized him and his game, and he'll often say, ‘Yeah, that’s accurate.’"

Next Up: China Open in Beijing

Shortly after the Laver Cup win, Zverev will compete at the China Open as the top seed. The path to the title looks challenging:

  • 1st Round: Cameron Norrie
  • 2nd Round: Sebastian Baez or Juncheng Shang
  • Quarterfinal: Possible matchup with Novak Djokovic (seeded 6)
  • Semi-final: Alex de Minaur (seed 3)
  • Final: Felix Auger-Aliassime (seed 2)

Zverev faces Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the opening round on Centre Court. While Djokovic is out of the top 10 after an early US Open exit, he remains unbeaten in Beijing and will be eager to bounce back.

Zverev has reached the semi-finals of the China Open three times (2017, 2019, 2023) but has yet to claim the title. Whether 2026 will be his year remains to be seen.
