Alexander Zverev Secures Year-End No. 1 Spot Among ATP Greats
Alexander Zverev is having the best season of his tennis career. After falling short in three consecutive Grand Slam finals, he finally captured his first major title at this year's French Open. Though he lost in the Wimbledon final soon after, Zverev bounced back strongly by winning the US Open.
The seasoned German's dedication on and off the court has brought him many rewards, including clinching the year-end ATP number one ranking. This achievement makes him the 30th player in men's tennis history to reach number one and the 20th to finish the year at the top.
Chasing the Legends
Zverev, now 29, aims to hold onto this spot for as long as possible. He still has ground to cover to match the elite group of 11 players who have finished multiple years as year-end number ones. At the forefront stands Novak Djokovic, with eight such finishes.
Players with the Most Year-End No. 1 Finishes
- Novak Djokovic: 8
- Pete Sampras: 6
- Roger Federer: 5
- Jimmy Connors: 5
- Rafael Nadal: 5
- Ivan Lendl: 4
- John McEnroe: 4
- Bjorn Borg: 2
- Lleyton Hewitt: 2
- Stefan Edberg: 2
- Carlos Alcaraz: 2
Zverev joins an exclusive club and can be proud of matching the single year-end number one achievements of players like Jannik Sinner, Jim Courier, Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, and Andy Murray.
Current Form and Upcoming Challenges
At the moment, Zverev is taking a break from ATP events following a loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Shanghai Masters semifinals. The Spaniard then went on to defeat Rafael Jodar in the final.
Interestingly, Davidovich Fokina has more Masters 1000 titles this year than Zverev, who only won the French Open and US Open. However, Zverev can level that count at the upcoming Paris Masters, which he plans to use to prepare for the ATP Finals in Turin.
