Abishek Porel Released on Bail Amid Rape Allegations

Abishek Porel, the Bengal wicketkeeper-batter who turned out for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, has been released on bail after spending more than a month in custody in connection with an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case.

The bail order came from a Chinsurah court, as reported by ABP Ananda and corroborated by multiple outlets, ending a 36-day spell in judicial custody that began with his arrest on August 11.

From complaint to custody

The case stems from a complaint filed by a medical student from Karnataka at Mogra police station on June 23. In her statement, she said she had been in a relationship with Porel for about three-and-a-half years, that the two had planned to marry, and that they had travelled abroad together during that period.

She alleged that Porel later denied the relationship, which she said pushed her to approach the police. She also referred to an earlier dispute between them around 18 months ago that had led to police intervention, though no formal complaint was lodged at that time, according to her account.

Police registered a case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 311 and 318 and other provisions of the BNS, and also invoked Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act. The matter then moved to the Calcutta High Court, which directed the police to arrest Porel and ordered the seizure of his electronic devices amid concerns over possible circulation of photographs of the complainant.

Alongside the rape allegation, the proceedings have also included accusations of criminal intimidation and other offences.

Porel was produced before the Chinsurah court following his arrest and was initially denied bail, sending him into judicial custody. He has consistently denied the allegations.

A rising career under a cloud

The legal battle has unfolded against the backdrop of a career that had been gathering pace.

At 23, Porel is seen as one of Bengal’s more promising wicketkeeper-batters. He broke into the Delhi Capitals setup in 2023 and made his IPL debut that season. By the 2026 campaign, he had put together 108 runs in four innings for the franchise, showing flashes of the aggressive strokeplay that made him a talking point on the domestic circuit.

Across all T20s, he has featured in 35 matches, scoring 769 runs at an average of 25.63 and a brisk strike rate of 145.37, with four half-centuries to his name.

In red-ball cricket, he made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021-22 season and has since become a regular, representing the state in 32 first-class games and 23 List A matches.

For now, the numbers pause while the case moves through the courts. What comes next for Porel — and for a career that had just begun to find its feet — will depend as much on the legal verdict as on his form with bat and gloves.
