Toto Wolff Defends George Russell’s F1 Title Hopes After Helmut Marko's Remarks
Toto Wolff, head of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, has challenged comments made by former Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko regarding George Russell's chances of becoming a world champion.
Currently, Russell trails his teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 123 points in the drivers' standings. Before the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, Marko told Sky Sports Deutschland that Antonelli had clearly taken the lead driver role within Mercedes.
"Russell is no longer the number one driver. Antonelli has quite clearly taken that spot from him. But Russell is one of the top drivers," said Marko. "I doubt whether he'll ever have another chance at the world title or be given number one status anywhere."
After the race in Austin, Wolff pushed back on those views.
"I start with Helmut, I mean, he's my Austrian, not-so-buddy, but I respect his opinion. But I think he's wrong on George. George has all the ability. I think the car doesn’t suit him," Wolff explained.
Wolff suggested the early season struggles might have affected Russell's momentum. He also expressed confidence in Russell's potential if the team delivers a competitive car next year.
"At the beginning of the season, it might be tough to handle feeling like this is your year, then seeing a wonderkid on the other side starting to chip away. I believe that in a new season, if we provide George with a quick car, winning a championship is absolutely possible," Wolff added.
He reminded critics not to overlook Russell’s past achievements, including his successes in F2, F3, and multiple karting championships.
"He has absolutely what it takes to win a championship. It’s too easy to dismiss all those years where he won in F2 and F3, his rookie seasons, and back-to-back European karting titles. That experience is still there," Wolff said.
