Southend United Signs West Ham's Ryan Battrum on Loan

Southend United have dipped into the Premier League talent pool, bringing in West Ham United right-back Ryan Battrum on a one-month loan as Kieron Dyer looks to keep his side’s strong National League start on track.

The 21-year-old, who can also step into midfield, is no stranger to Roots Hall. He faced Southend in July during a pre-season friendly for West Ham, a game that clearly left an impression on him.

"When I heard about Southend's interest I was buzzing," Battrum told the club’s website. He has seen the scale of the club up close and knows exactly what he is walking into. "I've played against them and watched them a lot. Getting crowds of 10,000 in the National League is amazing."

For a player trying to force his way into senior football at a top-flight club, that kind of platform matters. Big crowds, real pressure, a team with ambitions beyond simply surviving the division.

Dyer’s Southend sit fifth in the early National League table, beaten just once in seven games. It is a quietly impressive start, built on organisation and energy, and the manager has moved early to make sure standards do not slip on the flanks.

"It's always good to have two players for every position," Dyer said, outlining exactly where Battrum fits into his plans. "He gives Vontae Daley-Campbell great competition at right-back. He's got great energy, power, and strength, and he can also invert which we like our full-backs to do. He ticks all the boxes."

That last detail is crucial. Southend’s full-backs are not there just to defend their side of the pitch; they step inside, help build play and overload midfield. Battrum’s ability to “invert” makes him more than simple cover. He is a tactical tool Dyer clearly wanted.

The move also sends a clear message to Daley-Campbell. The shirt is his to lose, but there will be no comfort zone in that role now. Competition on the training ground should sharpen both players, exactly as Dyer intends.

Battrum will not have to wait long for his first taste of it. He is available for Tuesday night’s home game against Tamworth, a fixture that offers an immediate chance to feel that 10,000-strong noise for himself and to show why West Ham rate him – and why Southend moved quickly to bring him in.
