Richarlison’s Vasco Return Collapses Amid Contract Issues

Richarlison’s route out of Tottenham has closed again, and this one shut with a thud.

A proposed move back to Brazil with Vasco da Gama has collapsed, leaving the forward in limbo and his future at Spurs no clearer as the Brazilian transfer window ticks towards Friday night’s deadline.

Spurs are understood to have agreed a fee with Vasco for the 29-year-old, a deal that would have taken him back to the club where his professional journey began. The framework was there, the path laid out. Then the same problem that has stalked his recent moves reappeared.

The tension is not just about transfers. On Thursday, it emerged that Richarlison and Spurs are in dispute over the remaining nine months of his current deal. Sources indicate the forward is exploring his options and is keen to be released from that final stretch, freeing him to reset his career elsewhere.

Spurs, though, hold the cards. The club not only have those nine months in hand, they also possess the option to trigger a 12-month extension. In contractual terms, Richarlison is tied to north London far longer than he wants to be.

Roberto de Zerbi's Stance

Roberto de Zerbi, parachuted into the middle of this stand-off, wants no part in the off-field battle. Asked about the Brazilian’s future at his news conference on Friday, the Tottenham head coach cut a blunt figure.

“I don’t know,” he said. “It’s not my job.”

He did, however, make a point of stressing that both sides understand exactly what has unfolded in recent weeks.

“What I can say is I know very well what the club has done for Richarlison and I know very well what Richarlison has done for the club in the last month, two months,” De Zerbi said. “I know, the club knows, he knows, his agent knows. Everyone knows better than you [the media]. Much better.”

It was a reminder that whatever plays out in public is only a fraction of the story.

For now, the clock in Brazil is the loudest sound. When the window shuts on Friday night, one more escape route disappears. There is a growing sense within the game that Richarlison will stay at Spurs beyond that cut-off, not because all parties are aligned, but because no one has yet found a way to break the deadlock.
