Richarlison's Public Challenge Sparks Tension at Tottenham

Richarlison’s one-word question cuts through all the usual dressing-room diplomacy.

“Why?”

The Tottenham forward posted the message on social media on Tuesday, alongside a screenshot highlighting his omission from the squad for the Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool, punctuating it with a tearful emoji. It was a public challenge, and a pointed one, to Roberto De Zerbi’s decision to leave him out entirely.

For a player already walking a tightrope over his future in north London, the timing could hardly be more combustible.

A fractured relationship laid bare

Richarlison’s situation at Spurs has been simmering for weeks. A proposed move back to Brazil with Vasco da Gama collapsed late in the window, leaving him in limbo. Sources indicated Tottenham and Vasco had reached agreement on a fee for the 29-year-old, only for personal terms to remain unresolved when the Brazilian transfer window shut on Friday.

So he stayed. But not happily, if De Zerbi’s words are any guide.

Speaking on Monday before the Liverpool tie, the Spurs head coach painted the picture of a player who had already mentally checked out.

“At the start of this season, I spoke to him many times to convince him to stay and he didn't want to,” De Zerbi said. “I can't go every day to pray for him to stay.”

That line lands with force. This is not a manager hinting at a minor disagreement. This is a coach making it clear he pushed, the player resisted, and the door began to close.

De Zerbi went further, explaining that the club had tried to secure Richarlison’s long-term future.

“What I have done at the beginning of this season has been to speak with him and to propose an extension of the contract. If he said, 'no thank you,' I finished my job.”

In other words: the ball was in Richarlison’s court. He chose not to play it.

Tension behind closed doors

The Italian also alluded to a turbulent spell behind the scenes.

“I know what happened in the last 45 days. It's not right if I explained. It's not my behaviour. The relationship, the problem is between the player and the club.”

That line draws a clear boundary. De Zerbi is distancing himself from the deeper dispute, framing it as a structural issue rather than a personal feud. Yet his team selection against Liverpool — and Richarlison’s reaction to it — shows the tension has spilled into the open.

For a senior international forward to be omitted completely from a domestic cup squad is a statement in itself. To respond with a one-word public rebuke is another. The usual code of keeping grievances in-house has been broken on both sides, just in different ways.

Where next for Richarlison?

The failed Vasco move leaves Richarlison stuck between two worlds: unwanted enough to be on the market, valuable enough that Spurs were ready to negotiate, but now still at the club with a manager openly referencing his reluctance to stay.

The Brazilian has never been shy of emotion, on or off the pitch. Here, that emotion has gone straight onto social media, into the public arena, at a moment when his role under De Zerbi already looked fragile.

Tottenham, chasing trophies and stability under a demanding head coach, now have a high-profile forward questioning selection decisions in front of millions. De Zerbi, for his part, has drawn a hard line on commitment and contract talks.

The transfer window in Brazil is closed. The European season is in full swing. Something will have to give — and not in a WhatsApp chat or a private meeting room.

Richarlison has asked “Why?” The more pressing question for Spurs is how long this stand-off can last.
