Raúl Asencio Returns to Real Madrid Squad for Rayo Vallecano Clash

José Mourinho has his squad set for Real Madrid’s league meeting with Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, and one name on the list jumps out immediately: Raúl Asencio.

The young defender returns after more than a month on the sidelines, finally cleared to rejoin the group at a moment when Madrid’s calendar is starting to bite.

Asencio back from a bruising spell

Asencio has endured a stop-start spell that never really got going. A muscular injury to the rectus femoris first pushed him out of contention, then a setback in his shin bone stretched the absence to around six weeks. Until now, he has not played a single minute under Mourinho.

That changes this weekend. His full involvement in training over the last few days, and his ability to complete sessions at normal intensity before the Rayo clash, convinced the medical staff and Mourinho to bring him back into the matchday squad.

For the coach, the timing could hardly be better. Madrid are staring at a congested run of fixtures, with league games spilling into midweek and the demands on his central defenders rising. Asencio gives him another body in the heart of the back line, another profile to turn to when rotation stops being a luxury and becomes a necessity.

A summer of noise, on and off the pitch

Asencio’s reappearance also draws a line under a turbulent summer. The defender had been close to leaving the club, his future all but open, before injury abruptly froze any potential move and left him rehabbing rather than negotiating.

Off the pitch, the headlines kept coming. In recent days he learned of his acquittal in the case linked to a video in which he was involved. At the same time, a court found him guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol on the island of Gran Canaria last August.

Those incidents did not go unnoticed at Valdebebas. Mourinho made his displeasure public, delivering a sharp reminder of the standards he expects.

“A Real Madrid player remains a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. What you do outside the club can harm your reputation and the club's reputation, and I am not happy,” he said, laying down a clear line for Asencio and the rest of the dressing room.

Now the defender has no hiding place and no excuses. Fit again, included in the squad, and with his legal situation clarified, the focus turns back to football. He will have to earn Mourinho’s trust on the grass.

Key absences and a stacked squad

While Asencio returns, others drop out. Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo all miss the squad for the Rayo Vallecano game, thinning options in defence and attack and adding weight to Asencio’s recall.
