Premier League Predictions: Key Matches and Insights
Lewis Jones, better known as Jones Knows, has run his eye over a fascinating Premier League weekend – and the numbers, the narratives and the scars from recent weeks all point in some very specific directions.
Brentford vs Chelsea – Bees scent weakness
Chelsea walk into exactly the sort of fight they hate.
Brentford thrive on chaos: long balls, second phases, bodies crashing into the box, set-pieces whipped under the crossbar. Chelsea, by contrast, keep showing a soft underbelly in those moments. Hull City exposed it again, scoring from a corner when Emi Martinez failed to deal with a routine delivery. That kind of lapse is meat and drink to Thomas Frank’s side.
The stats are damning. Of the 17 teams to play every Premier League game since the start of last season, Chelsea have conceded the second-most goals from set-plays – 0.5 per game. Brentford have already targeted that flaw. Across the last three meetings, they’ve generated 0.73 expected goals per game from set-pieces alone.
The Bees know where to aim the punch. Chelsea look vulnerable, and the market leaves Brentford at Evens in the draw-no-bet line. That’s a home side with a clear route to goal against a defence that hasn’t learned the lesson.
Score prediction: 2-1 Brentford
Tottenham vs Aston Villa – Goals at a premium
Everything about this points to a tight, anxious lunchtime kick-off.
Tottenham’s attacking issues are no secret: four league games, no goals, and an attacking process that looks clogged. They’re averaging just 0.95 expected goals per game. For a Roberto De Zerbi side, that’s a jarring figure. His Brighton and Marseille teams averaged 1.92 goals per game; Spurs are crawling along at 0.73 since he walked through the door.
There’s a psychological edge to it now. Territory, possession, patterns – but when the final pass or finish is needed, the lights go out.
Villa aren’t much healthier in front of goal. One Premier League goal so far tells its own story. Their issue is different: they simply aren’t shooting enough. Low volume, low threat.
Two misfiring attacks, one game. The under 2.5 goals line at 10/11 stands out in a match where both managers are searching for fluency rather than unleashing it.
Score prediction: 1-1
Best bet: Under 2.5 goals (10/11)
Brighton vs Arsenal – Arteta’s champions get a real test
Fabian Hurzeler hasn’t beaten Mikel Arteta in five attempts, but he has made life distinctly uncomfortable for the champions.
These games carry needle. Between the players, between the dugouts. Brighton have bloodied Arsenal’s nose in the underlying numbers, winning four of the last five expected-goals battles. That matters. It tells you Hurzeler’s structure and bravery with the ball trouble Arteta’s side, even if the results haven’t yet flipped the rivalry.
Arsenal arrive perfect in points, but not at a price that screams value. The 7/10 on an away win feels short given how Brighton repeatedly drag them into awkward territory. The double-chance on Brighton at 11/10 looks the smarter side.
One duel jumps off the page. Olivier Boscagli is set to deal with Bukayo Saka, who looks back to full menace. Thirteen fouls drawn in three league games, three of them resulting in bookings. Defenders are struggling to stay legal around him.
Boscagli is priced at 5/4 to commit two or more fouls and 4/1 to be carded. Two previous bookings in two games against Arsenal add another layer. If Saka keeps driving inside and Boscagli keeps reaching, the referee will eventually step in.
Score prediction: 1-1
Everton vs Ipswich Town – Back to Leif Davis
Sometimes betting is about forgiving yourself and going again.
Leif Davis was flagged up to score or assist two weeks ago. The next game, against Crystal Palace, the angle was swerved. Naturally, he did both. That’s the business. You take the punch and look for the same edge if it’s still there.
It is. Davis is not playing like a conventional left-back. He’s operating almost as an auxiliary winger, constantly appearing in the final third and offering a direct route to goal. Two goals and an assist in four Premier League games underline his influence.
Look a little wider and the momentum is striking: include pre-season and he’s scored four times in his last seven matches. From left-back, that’s outrageous output.
The key price is on target. Davis to register a shot on target at 100/30 feels generous for a player who regularly finds himself in shooting positions.
Score prediction: 2-1 Everton
Best bet: Leif Davis 1+ shot on target (100/30)
Newcastle United vs Hull City – The scars of a beating
Teams don’t just walk away from a hammering. It lingers.
Newcastle didn’t just lose at Leeds; they were dismantled. Four down before they found a reply in a 4-1 defeat, with Matthias Jaissle admitting his young side couldn’t live with Leeds’ physicality and that the result was “difficult to digest”.
That sort of defeat drains legs and belief. History backs that up. Strip out games against Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, and look at sides who’ve conceded four or more in a Premier League match. In their next league outing, they’ve managed just one win from 15 – with five draws and nine defeats.
Hull walk into St James’ Park facing a side still nursing bruises. Hull or draw at 11/8 taps straight into that psychological hangover.
Score prediction: 2-1 Hull
Nottingham Forest vs Coventry City – McAtee in the firing line
Some prices simply don’t match the evidence on the pitch. James McAtee to be carded is one of them.
Forest’s midfielder has stepped into a demanding role, replacing Elliott Anderson’s energy and bite in the middle of the park. The Premier League is the most duel-heavy midfield environment in Europe, and McAtee has thrown himself into it.
Seven fouls in his last two league games. A yellow card in both. The pattern is obvious: he’s aggressive, he’s involved, and referees are noticing.
Yet the market leaves him at 13/2 to be booked again. That looks wrong. This isn’t a wide player occasionally tracking back; it’s a central midfielder living in the traffic.
Score prediction: 2-0 Forest
Best bet: James McAtee to be carded (13/2)
Bournemouth vs Liverpool – Iraola’s emotional return
Narrative doesn’t decide results, but it does shape occasions. Andoni Iraola’s first return to Bournemouth with Liverpool is one of those fixtures where the temperature rises a notch.
He spent three seasons on the south coast, dragged Bournemouth to their highest-ever Premier League finish, and then took the call from Anfield in the summer. Now he walks back into the Vitality Stadium, this time in red.
Managers going back to old homes often find the day awkward. David Moyes lost at Everton with Manchester United. Graham Potter was beaten at Brighton with Chelsea. Thomas Frank took only a draw at Brentford with Tottenham, Brendan Rodgers drew at Swansea with Liverpool, Mauricio Pochettino drew at Southampton with Spurs.
Different teams, different eras, same theme: these reunions are rarely straightforward. The home crowd knows the manager. The players know the manager. Every decision, every tweak, every substitution is loaded.
Bournemouth are 19/10 to win. On an emotional afternoon, that price gives them respect.
Score prediction: 2-1 Bournemouth
Leeds United vs Crystal Palace – Trust the Leeds machine
When the market underestimates Leeds, backing them usually pays.
You know exactly what you’re buying: organisation, aggression, set-piece threat, and a squad drilled to within an inch of its life in one clear way of playing. They simply don’t lose often.
Just one defeat in their last 13 Premier League games since March – six wins, six draws – the fewest losses of any side in that span. Newcastle felt the full force last time out, thumped 4-1 at Elland Road.
The most compelling angle, though, lies before the interval. Across their last 19 matches, Leeds have conceded just two first-half goals and kept 17 first-half clean sheets. That’s elite consistency from the opening whistle.
Palace, by contrast, have already shipped 11 goals in four league games. Leeds start fast, Palace start loose. The Leeds/Leeds half-time/full-time at 7/4 fits the profile of a side that seizes control early and rarely lets go.
Score prediction: 3-1 Leeds
Manchester City vs Sunderland – Haaland’s unfinished business
There is one Premier League club Erling Haaland hasn’t put on his personal hit list yet: Sunderland.
He has scored against 24 of the 25 teams he’s faced in the competition. Only the Black Cats remain untouched. Given his current form, that feels ominous.
Haaland has scored in each of his last three league appearances and nine times in his last nine. The latest was the winner at Old Trafford, another cold, clinical finish in a big moment.
Backing him just to score, though, doesn’t offer much. The smarter play layers in the likely pattern of the game. City tend to control, win, and move on without running up basketball scores.
Haaland to score in a City win with under 3.5 total goals at 11/8 captures that balance. Sunderland are stubborn enough to avoid a rout; City are ruthless enough to get the job done with minimal fuss.
Score prediction: 2-0 Manchester City
Fulham vs Manchester United – Chaos at Craven Cottage?
Michael Carrick doesn’t need another bad headline before the international break.
One win from four league games, a 2-0 lead tossed away against Brighton in midweek – the familiar Manchester United cycle is already whirring into gear. Pressure, scrutiny, doubt.
Fulham, though, won’t sit in and make this a cagey affair. They open the game up, which should suit United’s attackers. Both sides love to flood the box. They are joint-top in the league for touches in the opposition area with 139 each. That’s a huge red flag for anyone expecting a quiet afternoon.
One player stands above the rest in that chaos: Josh King. No one in the division has had more touches in the opposition box – 30 so far. Two goals from 11 shots, five on target, show he’s turning those positions into real threat.
Both teams to score and King to register a shot on target at 11/8 pulls together everything this game promises: space, chances, and a forward who lives where it hurts.
Score prediction: 3-2 Manchester United
