Power Struggle at ÖFB: Schöttel's Tenure Nears End

The most successful sporting period the Austrian federation has enjoyed in decades is on the brink of ending not on the pitch, but in the boardroom.

According to Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone, Peter Schöttel’s future as sporting director is set to be decided on Friday, when the ÖFB supervisory board meets to discuss what now looks like an inevitable parting of ways. After nine years in the federation, the man who helped steer Austria back onto the major-tournament map finds himself sidelined and isolated.

At the heart of it all: a fractured relationship with head coach Ralf Rangnick that insiders describe as beyond repair.

From Quiet Tension to Open Break

The cracks have been visible for some time. Inside the ÖFB corridors, people stopped pretending everything was fine.

Marc Janko, former Austria international and now a Sky pundit, did little to hide that reality. Speaking about the situation, he noted that anyone asking around “behind the scenes” would not be overly shocked by the current escalation. The sense of surprise has long since given way to resignation.

The core issue is the working relationship between Schöttel and Rangnick. Or rather, the lack of one.

“With Schöttel and Ralf Rangnick, it did not really work properly,” Janko explained. He went on to highlight a telling shift in the internal power structure: for some time, Rangnick has been handling “all the matters that are important to him” not through the sporting director, but through other people in the federation.

Once a sporting director is no longer the coach’s main point of contact, his authority is effectively stripped away. That is exactly what has happened here. The ÖFB has already moved Schöttel aside in practical terms; Friday’s meeting is expected to formalise what has been reality for months.

A Golden Spell Under Schöttel

The timing makes the rupture all the more striking. On the field, this has been a golden era for Austria.

Schöttel, now 59, joined the ÖFB setup in 2017, initially as U19 coach. Within two months, he had been promoted to overall sporting director, a rapid rise that underlined the trust the federation placed in him. Results soon followed.

Austria qualified for back-to-back European Championships, reaching the last 16 in both 2021 and 2024. For a nation that has often hovered on the fringes of major tournaments, that consistency marked a significant step forward.

The high point came last summer, when Austria reached a World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years. They exited in the round of 32 to eventual world champions Spain, but the symbolic value of simply being there again, competing on that stage, was enormous. It was the kind of achievement that usually cements a sporting director’s legacy.

Instead, it now looks set to serve as the closing chapter of Schöttel’s reign.

Prödl Waiting in the Wings

As the end looms for one figure, another name is moving into focus.

An official decision on Schöttel’s successor has not yet been announced, yet Krone reports that an internal favourite has already emerged: Sebastian Prödl.

The former Werder Bremen defender has been running the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024 and is highly rated within the federation. Those who work with him speak of clear ideas, strong communication and a deep understanding of the modern game.

One factor stands above the rest, though. Prödl is said to enjoy an “exceptionally good” relationship with Rangnick. In the current climate, that may be the decisive qualification.

The message from the top is unmistakable: the next sporting director must be aligned with the head coach, not in open conflict with him. After months of internal friction, the ÖFB appears determined to rebuild its sporting structure around a united front.

On Friday, the supervisory board is expected to draw a line under the Schöttel era. The real question is whether Austria can preserve the sporting momentum he helped create while reshaping the power structure that ultimately pushed him out.
