Newcastle United's Nick Woltemade Future: Dortmund's Interest Looms

Newcastle United may find the Nick Woltemade question answered for them before the window slams shut on Tuesday – and the solution could come from Germany.

The 24-year-old’s future on Tyneside has hung in the air all summer, but one sharp cameo in North London and a serious injury in Dortmund have dragged his name back to the centre of the market.

Dortmund’s Late Scramble

BILD reports that Borussia Dortmund are actively weighing up a move for Woltemade after Giannis Konstantelias suffered an ACL injury, confirmed over the weekend. For a club already reshaping its attack, losing a summer signing in that fashion is a brutal twist. It has also forced BVB to look again at a player they already know well.

“This setback could force Borussia Dortmund back into the transfer market,” BILD journalists Michel Schröer, Jörg Weiler and Yannick Hüber wrote, adding that Woltemade is one of the “prominent” names on their list.

This is not a bolt from the blue. Dortmund were linked with Woltemade earlier in the window and, according to reports in Germany, made initial contact weeks ago. A permanent deal, though, looks complicated. Newcastle’s valuation and the financial framework at Dortmund do not sit easily together, which is why a loan is viewed as the realistic path if they choose to move.

Newcastle’s Record Signing on the Block

Back in England, there is little attempt to hide Newcastle’s willingness to do business. TalkSPORT reported last week that the club are actively trying to move on their £69 million (€80 million) record signing. Fabrizio Romano has stated that Napoli have already made contact over a loan, while TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has mentioned talks around a possible return to Stuttgart, with RB Leipzig also monitoring the situation.

So Woltemade is not short of admirers. He is, however, still trying to convince his current club.

On Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he offered a reminder of why Newcastle paid so heavily for him. Introduced in the 71st minute alongside midfielder Sean Steur with the Magpies already in control, Woltemade made his mark almost immediately. From a Lewis Hall corner, he climbed and steered a clever header back across goal, where Yoane Wissa finished to seal a 2-0 victory. One touch, one decisive contribution, and a timely nudge to those considering shipping him out.

A Decision Tied to Newcastle’s Own Plans

For all the interest, Woltemade’s fate still hinges on what Newcastle do next in attack. The club are close to an agreement with Lille for Matias Fernandez-Pardo and have been exploring other forward options. If those deals land, the pressure to keep Woltemade eases. If they stall, he suddenly looks more valuable to Jaissle’s weekly line-ups.

At this stage, BILD are clear: Dortmund are considering Woltemade, not bidding for him. No formal offer, no agreement – just a strong name on a very short list. Yet Konstantelias’ injury has created an urgent need in their squad, and a loan would tick boxes for all sides: minutes for the player, cover for BVB, and another escape route for Newcastle’s record buy if their recruitment clicks into place.
