Melbourne Rules Out 2027 F1 Season-Opener Role

The Australian Grand Prix has drawn a firm line in the asphalt: it will not be Formula 1’s backup plan for the 2027 season-opener.

While F1 has laid out a 2027 calendar that starts in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, with regional uncertainty still hanging over the Middle East, Melbourne has removed itself from any conversation about stepping in. Its race is locked to early April – and staying there.

The provisional dates are set for April 1–4, and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation has tied that slot tightly to a major rebuild of Albert Park’s pit and paddock complex. Phase one of the project is due to be finished for the 2027 event, leaving little room to shuffle the schedule.

“Our date’s been locked in now, April 1-4, and clearly we’ve got a big asset being built behind us that has some timelines attached to it,” Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Travis Auld said on Thursday, speaking to media and quoted by Speedcafe. “So we’re pretty much locked in at that April 1-4 date. I think it would be difficult for us to move that date now.”

That closes off what had looked like a logical contingency. If F1 ultimately decides it cannot open the 2027 season in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Melbourne had been widely touted as the obvious alternative, ready to reclaim the curtain-raising role it has held so often in the past.

Not this time. The construction schedule is one factor; local life is another. The April slot aligns neatly with school holidays in Victoria, a sweet spot the promoter is keen to protect for crowd numbers and city-wide engagement. Shifting into March would mean tearing up both building plans and a proven attendance formula.

With Australia out, attention turns elsewhere on the calendar. The Chinese Grand Prix, pencilled in as round five on April 18 as the back end of an Australia–Japan–China triple-header, has been mentioned as a possible candidate to move if F1 needs a non-Middle East opener.

For now, though, Melbourne’s stance is clear. The season may start in the desert, or it may yet be forced to start somewhere else. But it will not start at Albert Park.
