Lamine Yamal Embraces Barcelona's Champions League Obsession

Lamine Yamal isn’t running from Barcelona’s biggest obsession. He’s embracing it.

For the 19-year-old, the demand that Barça win the Champions League is not a burden. It’s a standard.

“I like that people come to the dressing room and believe that we can win the Champions League,” he told Movistar, cutting straight to the core of the club’s mentality under Hansi Flick.

Barcelona have not lifted Europe’s biggest prize since 2015, a drought that feels almost unthinkable for a club that once treated Champions League nights as their natural stage. Under Flick, they have inched closer again, reaching a semi-final and a quarter-final. That taste of the latter stages has only sharpened the appetite.

The word around the club is “obsession.” Yamal doesn’t flinch at it.

Being obsessed with winning it, he argued, is “a good thing in the end.” What he rejects is arrogance, the idea that the trophy is guaranteed. “I think the problem would be if someone said that we are going to win it no matter what, because you will never know this.”

That distinction matters. Confidence, yes. Complacency, never.

Yamal leans on the weight of history. “We are Barça and Barça have had moments of being the best team in history and have won the Champions League. We have the team to do it,” he said. Then came the line that reveals as much about his character as his ambition: it would be “a bit cowardly” not to think that this is the year they go for it.

Not to aim for the Champions League? Not an option. Not in this dressing room. Not with this manager.

But he is not prepared to sacrifice La Liga on the altar of Europe. Far from it. Yamal is eyeing a hat-trick of league titles under Flick, and he made it clear that domestic dominance remains non-negotiable.

“In fact, we are going for the League, we can win the League and the Champions League,” he said.

The message is bold, but not reckless. To hit those heights, he knows Barcelona must master the ugly parts of games as well as the beautiful ones.

“We have to be a team that can stick together during those bad 20 minutes,” he added, highlighting the short, chaotic spells that often decide seasons. Those lapses, those moments when control slips, are where titles are won or lost.

Barça’s young star has drawn the line in the sand: no fear, no half-measures, no hiding from expectations. The club wants everything. So does he.

Now they have to live up to that obsession.
