Jurrien Timber Set for Arsenal Return as Champions Aim for Perfect Start

Mikel Arteta is close to getting one of his key pieces back. Jurrien Timber, sidelined since the Champions League final last season, is on the verge of returning to action for Arsenal as they look to extend their flawless start to their Premier League title defence.

The Dutch defender travelled with the squad for the midweek 1-0 win at Napoli and has been back in full training at London Colney, edging towards his first minutes of the campaign.

“Let’s see,” Arteta said when asked if Timber could feature at Sunderland on Saturday evening. “We have another training session today. He’s been training with us for a few days. Let’s see.”

For Arsenal, it would be a significant lift. Timber’s versatility and aggression in the back line were a major part of Arteta’s plans before injury halted his momentum. Now, with the champions three wins from three, his return would strengthen a squad already moving with purpose.

There was more cautious news on Cristhian Mosquera. The defender has missed the victories over Chelsea and Napoli with a knock. Arteta confirmed he is doing “really well”, but hinted that the weekend may come too soon, suggesting he could again be absent at the Stadium of Light.

Ben White, taken off in Italy, is understood to be fine, leaving William Saliba and potentially Mosquera as Arsenal’s only likely absentees for the trip north.

Arsenal arrive in Sunderland with their title defence gathering speed. A 2-1 win over Chelsea last time out in the league preserved their perfect start and underlined their authority at the top end of the table. The rhythm is strong, the confidence obvious.

But this fixture carries a warning.

On their last visit to the Stadium of Light, Arsenal saw an 11-match winning run snapped in dramatic fashion. Sunderland fought back for a 2-2 draw last November, with Brian Brobbey striking a stoppage-time equaliser after the visitors had turned the game around to lead.

That sting still lingers for Arteta.

“Last year we dropped points there and in the last minute,” he said. “We experienced and learned a lot from that game. Tomorrow we will discuss many things we want to be aware of and where we want to take the game and how to nullify their strengths.”

So the champions head back to Wearside with scars, but also with a sharper edge. A near-full-strength squad, a potential Timber comeback, and a perfect record on the line.
