Joe Bursik Returns to AFC Wimbledon on Season-Long Loan

A familiar face is back between the posts at Plough Lane.

AFC Wimbledon have brought goalkeeper Joe Bursik back to the club on loan from Championship side Portsmouth for the rest of the season, handing the Dons a homegrown addition at a key point in their campaign.

For Bursik, now 26, this is more than just another move on an already well-travelled CV. He first walked through Wimbledon's doors as an eight-year-old, learning his trade in the academy before leaving for Stoke City at 16. A boyhood project, now returning as a fully formed professional.

His reputation was forged during a strong spell with Stoke in the 2020-21 Championship season. Thrown into a demanding division, he responded with seven clean sheets in 16 league appearances, showing the sharp reflexes and composure that marked him out as a long-term prospect. That form opened the door to a series of loans, each one adding another layer of experience: Telford, Accrington, Doncaster, Peterborough. Different styles, different pressures, the same education.

The next step came in September 2025 when he signed for Portsmouth. At Fratton Park he added 10 more league games to his record and started in one of the club’s marquee fixtures of recent years, the 4-1 FA Cup third-round defeat to Arsenal. The result stung, but the stage underlined the level at which Bursik can operate.

Now he drops back into League football with something to prove and somewhere that already feels like home. Wimbledon gain a goalkeeper who has seen the grind of the Championship and the cut-and-thrust of lower-league battles, yet still has time on his side.

For a club that has always valued its own, the sight of a former academy keeper pulling on the shirt again will carry weight. The question now is simple: how far can player and club push each other this time around?
