The 34-year-old, fresh from ending a five-year stint at Real Madrid, has emerged as a shock candidate to shore up a back line that has been torn apart in the opening weeks of the Bundesliga season under Merlin Polzin. Bottom of the table, no goals scored, and humbling 5-0 defeats to Mainz and Leipzig – this is damage control territory.

In that context, Alaba’s name carries obvious allure. A serial winner, a former Bayern Munich cornerstone, a player who has lived most of his career at the sharpest end of European football. He is a free agent after leaving the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the 2025-26 campaign and, crucially, could be registered immediately despite the transfer window being shut, due to the emergency nature of Hamburg’s situation.

That is exactly what Hamburg lack right now.
