Edvin Austbø Joins West Ham United on Four-Year Deal

Edvin Austbø has swapped Stavanger for Stratford, signing a four-year deal at the London Stadium that underlines West Ham United’s intent to climb straight back into the Premier League.

The 21-year-old Norwegian forward, handed the No35 shirt, arrives with a clear message: he is not here to settle in quietly.

“It feels really good to be a Hammer,” he said, speaking with the excitement of a player stepping into the league he grew up watching on television. “Ever since I knew about the interest, I wanted to come here and have butterflies and am really looking forward to start playing for this amazing club.”

This is not a routine depth signing. West Ham see Austbø as part of the spine of a promotion push. The contract runs for four years, with an option of a further season, a commitment that speaks loudly about how firmly the club believes in his development curve.

The project sold itself to him quickly. The conversations with head coach Nuno and Director of Player Recruitment Nils Koppen did the rest.

“The talks I had with Nuno and Nils Koppen were amazing and I just felt from the start that this was a good match and that I really wanted to come here,” Austbø explained. “Obviously, the ambitions of the club are big and it's also for me as a player.”

Koppen, the man who led the chase, made no attempt to hide how long West Ham have had him on their radar.

“Edvin is a player we have tracked closely for some time and we are very happy to bring him to West Ham United,” he said. “He has made very impressive progress and built strong experience in Norway, and there has been a lot of interest in him across Europe.”

That interest never spooked West Ham. It sharpened their focus. They see attributes that translate to English football: pace, energy, intelligence without the ball and a willingness to run at defenders.

“We believe he has the right attributes, strengths and potential to be successful in English football,” Koppen added. “He is a quick, energetic and intelligent player, who will bring another positive option to our attacking profile.”

For Austbø, this is more than a move. It is a childhood image made real. The Premier League beamed into Norwegian living rooms; claret and blue among the colours on the screen.

“I watched English football on TV when I was a little kid. Everyone in Norway knows West Ham. It's such a big club and a club that belongs on the highest level in England.”

That sense of belonging now cuts both ways. West Ham are betting that his sharp movement and hunger will mesh with Nuno’s plans and the Championship’s intensity. Austbø is betting that this stage is where his game can explode.

“Edvin is highly motivated to take this next step in his career, and everyone here at the Club will do everything we can to help him to settle in as quickly as possible,” Koppen said.
