Soon after, Italian reporter Nico Schira added another layer, claiming Chelsea had tabled a formal offer worth €65m (around £56m) for Kone. The twist? Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini is understood to consider Kone “non-transferable”, a core piece of his plans. The decision, Schira suggested, would ultimately rest with the player and Roma’s ownership under the Friedkin family.

So Chelsea have the player on side. The question now sits in the Roma boardroom.

A deal moves into the ‘advanced’ zone

Just as that €65m figure began to circulate, Gianluca Di Marzio weighed in with a slightly different angle. He described the Kone-to-Chelsea negotiations as an “advanced” deal, but indicated the fee in play is closer to £52m rather than the higher number reported elsewhere.

Di Marzio’s update underlined the seriousness of Chelsea’s push. This is no speculative enquiry. This is a club trying to unlock the one move that will allow another blockbuster transfer to finally go through.

Roma, for their part, are reluctant sellers. Kone is seen as central, not expendable. But every player has a price, and every club has a breaking point. If Roma do eventually cash in, even begrudgingly, the implications stretch far beyond Serie A.
