The spark came from DZfoot journalist Ilyes Kaddouri, who claimed direct contact between Leverkusen’s hierarchy and Benzema. It was enough to send the story racing across social media, especially with the Frenchman freshly unattached after mutually terminating his deal with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

Then came the social-media breadcrumb. The former Real Madrid star followed Leverkusen’s official Instagram account. In the modern transfer ecosystem, that single click can be enough to trigger a storm.

Suddenly, the idea of Benzema in the Bundesliga, leading the line for the reigning German champions, didn’t feel entirely outlandish. At 38, but with his pedigree, his name still shifts conversations and back pages alike.

Leverkusen stand firm

Inside the club, though, the response was far less romantic. Rolfes’ statement was not just a denial; it was a line in the sand. Leverkusen, he made clear, are not in the market for a veteran superstar, no matter how illustrious the CV.

Despite reports that Benzema had been in touch with Leverkusen players Lucas Vazquez and Moussa Diaby, the decision-makers at the BayArena see no gap to fill in their attack. They believe the pieces are already in place.

Head coach Carles Martinez has Patrik Schick as his reference point up front, an experienced striker who knows the league and the club. Alongside him, Christian Kofane offers fresh legs and upward trajectory, a forward still carving out his reputation but trusted within the setup.
