Bartina Koeman, Beloved Figure in Dutch Football, Dies at 65

Bartina Koeman, the wife of former Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman and a familiar presence around Dutch football for nearly four decades, has died at the age of 65.

Her passing was announced by Koeman on Instagram, where the family shared a stark, deeply personal farewell to the woman who had stood beside him from his Ajax days to the Dutch national team dugout.

“With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mother and grandmother,” the Koeman family wrote.

A Long, Relentless Battle

Bartina’s fight with illness stretched across much of the last decade and a half of Koeman’s public career.

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. She recovered, only for the disease to return in 2018. In 2023, during Ronald Koeman’s second spell in charge of the Netherlands, doctors diagnosed her with chronic breast cancer after discovering metastases.

Koeman spoke openly about the ordeal in a television appearance in December 2025, explaining that treatment had been effective following that latest setback. Behind the touchline tension and tactical debates, there was a family living from scan to scan, result to result.

Through it all, she remained a constant presence, even as her own health deteriorated.

Strength Behind the Dugout

Ronald Koeman, now 63, stepped down as national team manager after the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. When he reflected on his decision, he made it clear how much his wife’s resolve had shaped his career.

“My wife Bartina has, despite her own illness process, supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as national coach. That testifies to an incredible strength. I am more grateful to her for that than I will ever be able to put into words,” he said.
