It is a stark contrast to Messi’s status in the city. His place in Barcelona folklore is untouchable. His exit, though, was anything but.

A breakup that never healed

The split in 2021 was never about football. Messi still dominated games, still bent La Liga to his will. The problem lay in the balance sheet.

La Liga’s financial controls and wage limits boxed Barcelona into a corner. Even after Joan Laporta campaigned for the presidency on a promise to keep Messi at Camp Nou, the club could not make the numbers work. The contract renewal collapsed under the weight of regulations and debt.

Yet the latest indications point in the opposite direction. There is no active project, no organising committee, no scheduled date. The tribute remains a concept, not a commitment.

Laporta continues to speak of Messi as a Barcelona legend and has voiced hope that their relationship can be repaired. He has also floated the notion of a proper public homage once the Camp Nou renovation is complete, a grand reopening with the club’s greatest icon at centre stage.

For now, that remains a distant idea. The stadium is being rebuilt. The team is being reshaped. The Messi chapter, at least officially, stays unresolved.

Barcelona once built an era around him. The question now is whether they will ever build him the farewell that era deserves.
