Athletic Bilbao vs Elche: A Clash of Form at San Mamés

Athletic Bilbao, sitting 9th with six points, stride into the game fresh from a statement win: a 3-0 dismantling of Atlético de Madrid in La Liga 2026/27. Elche CF, 19th with a single point and a defence leaking goals, travel north searching less for perfection and more for a foothold.

Two clubs, one stadium, very different moods.

Athletic’s growing authority

Edin Terzic’s side look like they’ve found an early groove. Two wins on the spin, two games unbeaten, and a swaggering performance against Atlético that underlined their potential.

Then come the Williams brothers.

Nico Williams and Iñaki Williams give Terzic pace, power and constant movement in behind. At San Mamés, with space to exploit and a crowd that feeds off aggression and intensity, that front line becomes a weapon as much psychological as tactical.

The only cloud is the absence of Unai Egiluz, sidelined with a cruciate ligament tear. Even so, Athletic arrive with rhythm, confidence and recent history on their side: they won the last meeting between these two, 2-1.

Elche arrive under pressure

On the other bench, Martín Anselmi has a different job: damage control and revival.

Elche come into this game on the back of three straight defeats. They have gone four matches without a win, four matches conceding, and away from home they have not tasted victory in their last two outings. The numbers tell a blunt story: this is a team that cannot yet close the door at the back, and cannot yet turn effort into points.

The 2-3 loss to Real Sociedad showed both their promise and their fragility. Matías Dituro stood in goal behind a back line of Buba Sangaré, Víctor Chust, Pedro Bigas and Tete Morente, but they still shipped three. Ahead of them, Facundo Buonanotte, Germán Valera, Gonzalo Villar and Javi Morcillo tried to knit play together, with Fer Niño and Ezequiel Ponce leading the line.

They scored twice. They still walked away empty-handed.

That is Elche’s season in miniature so far: competitive in moments, punished in the ones that matter.

A test of nerve at San Mamés

This fixture tilts towards Athletic on form, momentum and environment. San Mamés is unforgiving when the home side senses weakness, and Elche’s defensive record offers plenty of scent.

Yet the script is not written. Anselmi knows that a result here, even a hard-fought draw, could jolt his season into life. Keep Nico and Iñaki Williams quiet, survive the early surge, and doubt can creep into any stadium, even one as imposing as this.

Athletic, for their part, have a chance to turn a good start into something more serious. Win again, extend the run to three victories, and 9th place starts to look like a floor rather than a ceiling.
