Arsenal's £70m Gamble on Striker Álvarez

Mikel Arteta has sanctioned the break-up of his forward line – Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Fábio Vieira all heading for the exit in deals worth more than £70m – in the hope that Julián Álvarez can be lured back to the Premier League. Right now, the answer from the player is simple: Barcelona or nothing.

Álvarez torn between club and dream

Álvarez returned to Atlético Madrid training on Sunday, a conspicuous figure after being left out of the squad for the win over Sevilla. Atlético insist they will not sell to Barcelona. The player, though, has made it clear he wants only them.

Arteta spoke directly to Álvarez last week, trying to sell him on a central role in a reshaped Arsenal attack and a return to a league he knows well from his Manchester City days. The response was blunt. The Argentina international wants Barcelona, and has given no indication of softening that stance.

Barcelona, for their part, have already dipped into Arsenal’s squad. They have agreed an £8.6m deal for Jesus, who has entered the final year of his contract and slipped behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres in the pecking order. But the Spanish champions need more firepower after selling Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain and have not abandoned their pursuit of Álvarez.

Atlético have started to prepare for life with at least one new forward, agreeing a deal with Juventus for Jonathan David on an initial loan with an option to buy next summer. Even so, they are understood to be adamant that Álvarez, signed from City in 2024, is not for sale – especially not to Barcelona.

That leaves Arsenal trying to change a mind that does not want to be changed.

Arsenal reshaping attack under pressure

Inside the Emirates, there is still a sliver of hope that the 26-year-old could reconsider. But the clock is ticking, and Arsenal are already moving through alternative options.

Iliman Ndiaye of Everton featured on their shortlist, a versatile forward with the pressing energy Arteta values. Tottenham, though, have stolen a march and are in advanced talks over a £60m deal for the Senegal international.

Other targets have slipped away. Morgan Rogers has gone to Chelsea. An audacious move for Vinícius Júnior never got off the ground, the Brazil star instead signing a contract extension at Real Madrid. Each missed opportunity tightens the focus on Álvarez and raises the stakes on Arsenal’s recruitment.

They have acted on one flank. Christos Tzolis has arrived to replace Leandro Trossard on the left. Yet Martinelli’s impending move to Al-Hilal for a club-record £56m fee opens up another gap. It is a bold sale: Martinelli scored six times in the Champions League last season, even if he managed only one in the Premier League. He was left out of the squad for the opening-weekend win over Coventry and is due for a medical on Monday.

His departure will eclipse the £40m Liverpool paid Arsenal for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2017, underlining just how much faith the club is placing in this attacking reset. Eberechi Eze can operate on the left and offers tactical flexibility, but he is not a like-for-like replacement for Martinelli’s direct running and penalty-box instincts.

Vieira, meanwhile, is set to make his loan spell at Hamburg permanent in an £8.6m deal, trimming further depth from the creative ranks.

A rebuild hinging on one decision

Arsenal are not tearing this squad up, but they are clearly shifting its spine. Proven forwards are being cashed in. Spaces are opening in the dressing room and on the team sheet. The plan is obvious: refresh the attack, raise the ceiling, trust Arteta’s structure.

Yet so much of that plan now leans on a striker standing firm on a different dream, with a club who refuse to sell him to the team he wants and another who cannot yet tempt him to change his mind.

If Álvarez does not blink, Arsenal’s next move in this high-stakes rebuild will define more than just the end of their window. It could shape the edge – or the bluntness – of their title challenge.
