Alisson Becker Fined £8,000 After Tunnel Incident

Alisson Becker has been hit with an £8,000 fine by the Football Association after the Liverpool goalkeeper lost his temper in the tunnel area and lashed out at the fourth official’s numbers board following the final whistle.

The incident came at the end of a fraught finish, with the Brazil international furious over a late penalty awarded against him for a challenge on Neco Williams. The foul was given even though the defender had already got his shot away before colliding with the Liverpool keeper, a call that left Alisson incensed as he headed off the pitch.

On his way back towards the dressing room, that anger boiled over. The numbers board, already a symbol of frustration on the day after malfunctioning and delaying a planned triple substitution from Andoni Iraola, became the target of Alisson’s ire as he took out his frustrations on the equipment near the tunnel.

The FA confirmed the charge in a brief statement, outlining that “the goalkeeper acted in an improper manner around the tunnel area after the final whistle.” Alisson accepted the misconduct charge and with it the standard financial penalty.

His sense of injustice has since found some backing. The Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel has reviewed the episode and concluded that referee Sam Barrott made the wrong decision in awarding the spot-kick.

The ruling will not change the result, nor will it erase the fine, but it does leave a lingering question: how long will players tolerate decisive errors when the only tangible punishment lands on them?
