Newcastle United Eye Geny Catamo for January Transfer

Newcastle United’s recruitment drive has barely paused since the summer window closed. After a window shaped by youth, upside, and long-term planning, the club is already deep into its January plotting – and a new wide option has moved onto the radar.

Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo is the latest name under serious consideration, with the Mozambique international drawing growing interest from across the Premier League.

Catamo catches the eye

According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle have stepped up their scouting of the 25-year-old in recent weeks, with Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton also checking in on the winger. Aston Villa, too, are understood to be monitoring his situation closely.

Catamo has done his part to fuel the attention. He has started the season sharply for Sporting, registering two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances. Those numbers, combined with his age profile and room for further growth, fit neatly into the kind of recruitment Newcastle have prioritised under their current project.

Newcastle are not arriving late to this particular chase. Bailey reports that several clubs, including Premier League sides, made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer and have continued to track his progress as he has forced his way into the conversation at Sporting.

The biggest problem? Sporting themselves.

Sporting’s stance and Sunderland’s failed push

Sunderland know all about that. The Black Cats made Catamo a leading target in the summer window but hit a brick wall in negotiations. Sporting refused to entertain a deal below the player’s release clause and made it clear that any buyer would need to pay the full €60 million (£51 million).

For Sunderland, that was a step too far. The Championship club walked away, but not from the player entirely. Their interest remains, even as the landscape around Catamo has shifted and the competition has intensified.

Now Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa stand in line as potential Premier League destinations, all assessing whether Catamo is the kind of winger worth pushing the budget for in January.

Premier League pull vs €60m problem

One factor tilts the scales slightly towards England. Bailey reports that Catamo is “more than open” to a move to the Premier League and is attracted by the chance to test himself there. That kind of willingness can matter in a crowded race, especially if a player makes it clear to his club where he wants his next step to be.

But willingness alone does not move a release clause.

As it stands, there is no sign Newcastle have submitted an offer or opened formal negotiations with Sporting. The Portuguese club’s position remains the central question: will they soften their €60 million stance once the winter window opens, or will they hold firm and dare suitors to meet the clause?

If Sporting refuse to budge, Newcastle must decide whether a 25-year-old with a bright start to the season and clear upside is worth a fee in the region of £51 million – or whether that kind of outlay is better reserved for another target in a market that will only grow more aggressive.

January will bring the answer. Whether it brings Catamo to Tyneside is another matter entirely.
