Manchester United have been hit by a remarkable twist in their academy ranks, with teenage forward Gabriel formally asking to be deregistered and have his deal terminated before it expires at the end of the season.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have already held preliminary talks, with Gabriel’s Irish EU passport smoothing any potential move to Spain. It removes a major regulatory hurdle and makes him an even more attractive proposition for La Liga’s superclubs.

If he stays in England, the picture changes but the demand does not. Chelsea are currently leading the domestic chase. A switch to Stamford Bridge, though, comes with its own complications: the London club are serving a nine-month ban on registering academy players. Gabriel could join, but he would have to wait until January to officially sign.
