Letran and San Beda Clash in High-Stakes NCAA Showdown

The finalists from a season ago return to center stage on Thursday, each chasing very different kinds of momentum as NCAA Season 102 rolls on at the San Juan Arena.

On one side, Letran is hunting a 3-0 start and a firmer grip on early supremacy. On the other, San Beda is simply looking to breathe, desperate for a first win in a campaign that has begun with more questions than answers.

The Knights have been ruthless so far. Two games, two clinical wins, and barely a hint of rust from a retooled roster that lost key pieces but found a new anchor in Denzil Walker.

Letran’s newest reinforcement has not eased his way in. He has kicked the door down.

Walker dropped 21 points on Perpetual, then followed it with 25 against San Sebastian, instantly stepping into the scoring void left by the absence of Deo Cuajao and Jun Roque. For a Muralla-based squad forced to recalibrate on the fly, his production has been less luxury, more lifeline.

At 6-foot-4 and versatile on both ends, Walker has given coach Allen Ricardo exactly what he needed: a focal point. Around him, the Knights will again lean on the steady presence of Chad Gammad and the energy of Titing Manalili as they try to keep their record spotless in the 5 p.m. main game.

They will need that edge. Emilio Aguinaldo College may be winless, but a cornered side is rarely comfortable company.

EAC chasing breakthrough

The Generals are stuck in a slump, but not without fight. Their latest outing, a 91-87 defeat to Arellano last Tuesday, showed a team that can hang around and push games into the final minutes.

To finally break through in this “grand old league” edition, EAC will again pin its hopes on Jude Bagay, Kyle Ochavo, MJ Raymundo and Jacob Shanoda. That core has the scoring chops to test Letran’s defense if the Knights come in even slightly off their usual rhythm.

For EAC, this is more than just another date on the schedule. Against an unbeaten finalist from last year, a first win would change the temperature of their season overnight.

Red Lions on the rebound

The curtain-raiser at 3 p.m. carries its own intrigue.

San Beda, the reigning back-to-back champion, is chasing a very different kind of streak: the one that starts at zero. The Red Lions are still searching for their first victory of Season 102, a strange sentence for a program used to dictating the pace of a tournament, not chasing it.

A loss to the College of Saint Benilde Blazers has already put them on the back foot. A scheduled game against the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers was then washed out by heavy rains, denying them an immediate chance to respond and leaving frustration to simmer a little longer.

Now they finally get their crack at a reset against the Lyceum Pirates.

The challenge is clear. Shake off the rust from the unexpected layoff, reassert the identity of a two-peat hopeful, and prove that the early stumble was a warning shot, not a warning sign.

Lyceum, for its part, knows exactly what a wounded San Beda looks like: dangerous, urgent, and rarely forgiving. The Pirates will not need reminding that a Red Lions side with its pride pricked often plays with a sharper edge.

Two former finalists, two very different missions, one charged Thursday double-header. By the time the lights dim in San Juan, the early shape of Season 102’s title race will look just a little clearer — and for one of these heavyweights, a lot more complicated.
